App: message editing

What variant of Codex are you using?

Version 260206.1448 (565)

What feature would you like to see?

Should be able to go back and edit messages in a conversation, supporting undoing of proceeding edits, like Cursor.

message editing/rewinding seems to be really important for context management, undoing, traversing on different tangents and then coming back.

For a workaround I sometimes use the Fork feature which is recently launched in the codex app but it's still not the same.

This seems to be the only reason I have some of my complex sessions in non codex app agents anymore other than this codex app is my default agent of choice for all my work

I can't believe message editing hasn't been implemented in the app. Such a basic feature. Going back to the CLI for now.

Press Esc twice, and on the screen that appears, you can use the left and right arrow keys to select a message, then press Enter to edit it.

Agreed! I've left a couple of relevant comments on https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/2948#issuecomment-3696751032; see also https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/12450, as well as some discussion on Xwitter re: Pi's /tree.

hi, the openai codex really lacks this feature, no editing - more actions to repeat to get to the desired statue. imho this is must have, cc has this for long time

JaredReabow · 4 months ago

agreed, how is this not a thing???
at a bare minimum it shoudl support the same features as built in copilot

Need rewind.

bgmulinari · 2 months ago

Yep, I also need this so bad. It sucks having to waste tokens and context just to tell Codex to undo stuff.

C'mon guys, this is Claude Code all over again 🤦‍♂️

Just add an edit button, forking is just not cutting it, it's slow and annoying and pollutes the chat list. It's a single conversation, I don't need multiple.

Why don't the product managers at Codex try copying the features from Claude Code? Please prioritize this request; the "rewind" command is crucial. Since switching from Claude Code to Codex, I have to commit to Git after every single conversation, which is a huge hassle.
