More details to help reproduce:

  • Windows 11, installed Codex from Microsoft Store.
  • My Windows user profile contains accented characters: C:\Users\JesúsLópezMartín\
  • Codex crashes on startup with "A JavaScript error occurred in the main process" and tries to create:

C:\Users\Jes?sL?pezMart?n\.codex\sqlite
(note the corrupted path with '?' instead of Unicode accents)

  • I can create the expected folder manually without any permission issues:

mkdir "%USERPROFILE%\.codex\sqlite" -> works
So this looks like a Unicode/encoding bug in how Codex resolves USERPROFILE on Windows.

Codex package/version (from error dialog / installed apps): OpenAI.Codex_26.304.1528.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
Tried: Repair/Reset app, renaming .codex, junction mklink /J to C:\codexdata — no change.

Looks like duplicate of #13553, but I’m on Microsoft Store build OpenAI.Codex_26.304.1528.0... and the failing path becomes Jes?s...
