What variant of Codex are you using?

CLI

What feature would you like to see?

As a developer that does alot of their work in the terminal and with CLI tools, aesthetics and vanity has become an nice to have I enjoy tinkering with with every new tool. I'm proposing the ability to allow for custom plugins to alter the status-line currently in Codex CLI. I currently have a branch/PR ready to add this ability to Codex CLI. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Adding a concrete integration use case from Visa CLI:

We want to render a payment/spend HUD in Codex similarly to Claude Code's command statusLine. The useful shape for us is a custom status line item that can execute a command with a machine-readable Codex session payload on stdin and render one or more returned lines near the terminal input.

Today we added a Visa-side structured renderer in Visa-Crypto-Labs/Visa-mono#713:

  • visa-cli statusline --json returns structured HUD data for clients that want to render themselves.
  • The renderer accepts Codex-like fields such as app/model, cwd/project, branch, run state, thread title, context percent, and token counts.
  • visa-cli hud enable codex currently falls back to a shell prompt HUD because Codex does not yet expose a Claude-style command statusline install target.

A first-class Codex custom status line command would let payment, observability, quota, CI, and agent-orchestration tools pin live context in the same place users already look while the agent is moving.
