Doesn't work from home but codex cli works from a vm on oci, so exposing another IP.
Seems OpenAI may have _inadvertently_ backlisted a bunch of valid IPs...

Just provided context (and workaround) here but instead of replying, do thumb-up the original post to get more traction, as there are 2.5k issues logged already and # of likes help prioritize (usually).

Same issue here on Linux (Ubuntu 24.04, x86_64) with Codex CLI v0.121.0 using ChatGPT login (Plus plan).

Error from logs:

WARN codex_core::session_startup_prewarm: startup websocket prewarm setup failed: unexpected status 403 Forbidden: Unknown error, url: wss://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses, cf-ray: 9ef506039a7ba9cd-TPE

All WebSocket connections to wss://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses return 403 Forbidden. The cf-ray IDs show traffic is routed through Cloudflare TPE (Taipei) edge.

Codex launches and MCP servers start, but the agent cannot respond to any input. Retries exhaust (5/5) and eventually fail.

Environment:

  • Codex CLI: 0.121.0 (npm global @openai/codex)
  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, x86_64
  • Auth: ChatGPT login (Plus)
  • Network: Direct (no proxy), Cloudflare edge: TPE (Taipei)
