Codex Windows app and VS Code extension memory usage climbs above 10GB after update
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
26.422 Both issues appeared/worsened on v26.422. v26.421 was working fine/better before this update.

What issue are you seeing?
After updating Codex on Windows from v26.421 to v26.422, I am seeing two serious issues:
- Project chat/thread history disappeared
My project folders are still present, but the previous Codex project chats/threads/history/context appear to be gone.
The project itself was not deleted. Only the Codex chat/thread history and context for the project disappeared.
This is important because the previous chats contained project context and work history needed to continue the project.
- RAM usage keeps climbing above 10 GB
On v26.422, Codex uses an abnormal amount of RAM and the memory usage keeps increasing over time. It can climb above 10 GB, making the app and computer difficult to use.
I also saw similar behavior with the Codex VS Code extension, where memory usage became very high and the Codex panel sometimes appeared blank or unusable.
Expected behavior:
- Project chat/thread history should remain available after updating the app, especially when the project folder itself still exists.
- Codex should use a reasonable amount of memory and should not continuously increase RAM usage during normal use.
Actual behavior:
- Project folders are still visible, but previous Codex project chats/threads/history are missing after updating to v26.422.
- Codex v26.422 on Windows keeps increasing RAM usage and can climb above 10 GB.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Use Codex on Windows v26.421 with an existing project and active project chat/thread history.
- Update Codex to v26.422.
- Reopen Codex and open the same project.
- Observe that the project folder is still present, but the prior chats/threads/history are missing.
- Continue using Codex normally or leave it open for some time.
- Check memory usage in Task Manager.
- Observe that Codex memory usage keeps increasing and can climb above 10 GB.
Notes:
- This happened on Windows.
- v26.421 was working fine/better before the update.
- The problems appeared/worsened on v26.422.
- The project itself remained.
- The missing-history issue is specifically about Codex project chats/threads/context.
- The RAM issue appears to be abnormal memory growth or a possible memory leak.
- I also saw similar high memory usage and blank/unusable panel behavior with the Codex VS Code extension.
What is the expected behavior?
If project chats are not expected to survive app updates, please clarify that explicitly.
If they are expected to persist, then this appears to be a bug causing project chat/thread history and context loss even though the project folder itself remains.
For the RAM issue, this appears to be abnormal memory growth or a possible memory leak in Codex v26.422 on Windows.
I can attach:
- Screenshot of the project folder still existing
- Screenshot showing missing chats/history
- Screenshot showing Codex version v26.422
- Screenshot of Task Manager showing Codex memory usage above 10 GB
- Screenshot of the blank/unusable VS Code Codex panel, if needed
Additional information
This started after updating to Codex v26.422 on Windows. v26.421 was working better/fine before this.
Main problems:
- Project folder still exists, but Codex project chats/thread history disappeared.
- Codex v26.422 RAM usage keeps climbing above 10 GB on Windows.
I can provide screenshots showing the project still exists, missing chat/thread history, Codex version, and Task Manager memory usage.
