Improve Codex CLI UX for long-running development workflows
Feature Request: Codex CLI UX fuer langfristige Entwicklungs-Workflows verbessern
- TUI-Schalter fuer Plan/Build
/historyund Session Resume- Persistente Hintergrund-Shells
- Subagent-Unterstuetzung

Title: Improve Codex CLI UX for long-running development workflows
Feature Request: Improve Codex CLI UX for long-term development workflows
I recently switched completely from competing CLI coding tools to Codex CLI. GPT-5 with reasoning is excellent, and in my view Codex has the potential to become the best CLI coding tool. The model quality is already very strong, but the CLI UX still needs some improvements.
Requested features
Subagent support
Users should be able to define and run subagents for clearly scoped tasks. These subagents should have their own context and return only summaries, results, or diffs back to the main session.
Session history and resume
A /history or similar slash command should be able to show and resume previous sessions. This is very important for real development work.
Control over the thinking view
There should be options to hide the thinking/progress display, show only snapshots, or show the full view.
Better text pasting
When pasting links and multiline text, the content should be preserved correctly. On Windows, backslashes can be lost, and multiline text is sometimes automatically submitted after the first paragraph.
Better MCP server management
Setup, overview, status display, and TUI management of MCP servers should be improved.
Persistent background shells
Codex should be able to start background shell sessions, keep them alive, read logs, and continue working with them during the conversation.
Native Windows support
Windows should be better supported natively, rather than feeling like a WSL/wrapper setup. Many developers still work on Windows.
TUI toggle for Plan/Build
There should be a visible TUI toggle for Plan and Build mode.
General TUI improvements
The TUI should become more modern and clearer overall. In particular, the TODO section should remain more visible and be updatable by the agent during the session.
Why this matters
Codex already has a major advantage because of its model quality. If these UX workflows are improved, Codex could become the preferred daily CLI coding tool for many developers.
