I purchased additional Codex credits but still can't use it.

What version of the Codex App are you using (From "About Codex" dialog)?

26.423.10653

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Windows 11

What issue are you seeing?

After hitting my usage limit and following the in-app instructions to purchase more credits, the Codex App still shows the same usage limit error and will not let me continue:

You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade to Pro (https://chatgpt.com/explore/pro), visit https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage to purchase more credits or try again at Apr 28th, 2026 4:13 PM.

My bank statement confirms a successful charge:

  • Date: Apr 27, 2026, 11:30 AM
  • Merchant: OPENAI* CHATGPT CREDIT +14158799686 CA
  • Amount: $31.00 (Foreign Currency)

Despite this charge, the app still shows the original reset time (Apr 28th, 2026 4:13 PM) and does not let me use Codex.

Additionally, my OpenAI account now shows a Workspace that I did not intentionally create.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Sign in to Codex App on Windows 11 with a personal OpenAI account (ChatGPT Plus, app version 26.423.10653).
  2. Use Codex until the app shows the message: "You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade to Pro... visit https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage to purchase more credits or try again at Apr 28th, 2026 4:13 PM."
  3. Follow the in-app link to https://chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage and purchase additional Codex credits ($31.00).
  4. Confirm bank processes the charge: "OPENAI* CHATGPT CREDIT" $31.00 on Apr 27, 2026 at 11:30 AM.
  5. Return to the Codex App and attempt to continue using it.
  6. Observe that the app still shows the same "You've hit your usage limit... try again at Apr 28th, 2026 4:13 PM" message and does not allow continued use despite the successful payment.
  7. Check OpenAI account and notice an unexpected Workspace account has been created without explicitly choosing to create one.

What is the expected behavior?

After successfully purchasing additional Codex credits with my personal OpenAI account, the Codex App should immediately recognize those new credits and allow me to continue using Codex without waiting for the original reset time.

No new Workspace should be created automatically unless I explicitly choose to create one. If a Workspace is created as part of the credits flow, the app should either:

  • Clearly prompt me to switch to that workspace if that is where my new credits were applied, or
  • Apply the credits directly to the personal account that was used to initiate the purchase.

Additional information

I intended to use Codex only under my personal OpenAI login and did not have or want a workspace account prior to this.

After purchasing $31 of Codex credits, the desktop app still reports that I have hit my usage limit and tells me to try again at Apr 28th, 2026 4:13 PM.

At the same time, my OpenAI account now shows a Workspace that I don't remember creating, and it's unclear whether my new credits are attached to that workspace or to my personal account.

I need the credits I just bought to be usable from the Codex App with my personal login, or clear guidance on how to connect the app to the context where the credits reside.

+1 — Confirming this exact bug as a paying ChatGPT Pro customer on May 21, 2026.

Setup

  • Plan: ChatGPT Pro
  • Platform: macOS, Codex Cloud + VS Code extension
  • Single account (no separate workspace involved)

What happened

  1. Hit the usage limit on Codex.
  2. Following the in-app upsell, purchased $40 USD in credits → bug persisted, same "You've hit your usage limit" banner.
  3. Purchased an additional $20 USD in credits today (Invoice A457F9C2-0003, 6:33 PM AST) → Codex allowed ~3 runs, then immediately re-blocked with the SAME message and reset timer ("Tu límite de uso se restablece el 26 may 2026, 2:40 p.m.").
  4. Total $60 USD in purchased credits sitting unusable.

Per the April 2 2026 pricing change (community thread #1378553), purchased credits only consume AFTER the weekly Pro allocation resets. This is NOT disclosed in the in-app purchase prompt that recommends buying more credits when you hit the limit. The current UX functionally sells credits the user cannot use until the weekly counter resets.

Cross-references to same/related bug

  • #18083 (CLI blocked while UI shows credits)
  • #14789 (weekly usage not resetting after Pro upgrade)
  • community.openai.com/t/1378847 (1000 credits gone in <1h)
  • community.openai.com/t/1365284 (OpenAI Support confirmed fix in progress)

Asks for the engineering team

  1. Stop showing the "buy more credits" upsell when the blocker is the weekly Pro counter, not credit balance.
  2. Allow purchased credits to bypass the weekly throttle (this is what users believe they are buying).
  3. Provide a manual unblock path through support for users who already paid.

I have an active support ticket escalated to a human at help.openai.com — happy to share the case ID with engineering if useful.

Got a similar issue using the business plan. I think it happened when I went over the 5h limit and drained all team credits. I have plenty of weekly usage left and the 5h window did already reset but the app still shows "You’re out of Codex messages" with an info to wait until the weekly reset.

I submitted feedback with the following ID: 019e4f6f-1cc1-7280-9eff-e1089ac7cb95

_Update:_
For me it was a user limit on Flexible Pricing credits from our Business plan.

This issue is still occurring for me on a ChatGPT Plus account.

I am using Codex through the ChatGPT iOS app. After reaching the usage limit, Codex displays the following message:

“You’ve hit your usage limit. Upgrade to Pro, visit chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage to purchase more credits, or try again at [reset date/time].”

However, the experience is confusing for several reasons:

  1. My account already has credits available.
  2. Codex reports that I have hit a usage limit despite credits being present.
  3. The ChatGPT iOS app provides no way to purchase additional Codex credits directly.
  4. The error message links to a web URL, but tapping it requires a separate browser login and does not provide a clear explanation of whether the limitation is:
  • a credit balance issue,
  • a weekly/monthly usage quota,
  • a Codex-specific rate limit,
  • or a Plus-plan limitation.

From the my perspective, the message implies that purchasing additional credits should resolve the problem, but the application does not clearly indicate whether additional credits are actually usable for the exhausted quota.

A link to the web URL is not helpful either.

Suggested improvements:

  • Display current credit balance directly in the error message.
  • Clearly identify which limit has been reached.
  • State whether purchasing credits will immediately restore access.
  • Provide a way to manage or purchase credits directly from the iOS app.
  • Avoid sending users through a separate web login flow without additional context.

At the moment the error message does not provide enough information to determine what action, if any, will restore Codex access.

This is crazy. I see all the comments.

People talking too much and masking or hiding the actual problem.

Codex is not letting you have credit when you pay for it.

Are they a scam? Are they deceptive? Are they playing games? You pay for extra credit.

Just let the fucking credit show. Show some confirmation. Let me teach you how to code, you motherfuckers. Bitches.

They bombard the entire page with cookies, cookies. There are cookies there.

But when it comes to telling you when your payment has gone through and here's your credit, they won't say nothing.

You just click add money, and then you just have to hope and pray that you have credit.

Bullshit fucking companies. All of them. That's what I want to hear in the comment. Not explanation, what MacBook or Windows.

Stupid questions. Call them out.

Let people read the comment and see that they are liars, or they are cheaters, or that they are deceivers, or hiding the truth.

When you pay, you should just see the credits right away.

Oh, you might be paying in the wrong, maybe you have many accounts.

Why are you hiding this? Let the problem be seen clearly. You people talk too much. Look at all the explanation.

Where's my money I paid? I want to see the credit.

Say like that rather than saying a thousand words and hide the main problem that Codex is bullshit.

Or the OpenAI rather.
