Think about it, there's no option to add your number anywhere in the settings. The section for phone numbers in the platform panel is not editable. Since you're so smart, answer this now: I want to buy a subscription, but I can't link my number or register with it. What's next, smart guy?

Unfortunately instead of sending me a normal SMS, it wants to require me to use Whatsapp (which, checking my history, I've never used with this number, nor even installed on PC nor in Play Store). It's poorly implemented if it doesn't exclude accounts/emails with 6mths+ history/age on them. Obviously it's not just a throwaway in that case.

If people are using paid accounts, they should be able to log in from wherever they want, without issue, especially if they have MFA on their account (password+emailed code, OR SMS'd code, OR google authenticator etc) and have passed that. Sure, makes sense to be a bit tight with free accounts, but why tf should I (as a subscription paying customer) have to create an account with a completely unrelated company and provide them my number, just so I can then provide you my number to get a code? It's bonkers mate. Just have the standard bloody SMS option at least 🤷

I’m experiencing a related issue, but with a specific bug in the phone number input field.

When entering a phone number in international format:

+2012XXXXXXXX
(or typing +20 12XXXXXXXX)

The extension automatically modifies it to:

+20012XXXXXXXX

It inserts an extra "0" after the country code (+20 → +200), which makes the number invalid.

Because of this:

• SMS verification codes never arrive
• It is impossible to complete login in the VS Code extension

Things I tried:

• Entering without spaces
• Copy/paste instead of typing
• Using different formats (+2012…, 2012…)

The issue persists in all cases.

This seems like a formatting/validation bug affecting certain country codes (Egypt +20).

I’m a ChatGPT Plus subscriber.

The problem is with Saudi phone number formatting. When I enter my number with country code +966, the form formats it incorrectly / adds an extra 0 / does not accept it, so I cannot complete verification.

Even I tried with Egyption phone number and from alot of devices and browsers and I got the same problems.

Any update? Also agreed there some UI bug but it not the root cause, if you check the network tab on dev tool, *_dump, they fetched the correct format “+84<number>”, so need more investigate on the sending sms message logic.

Codex CLI / IDE OAuth login is incorrectly requiring phone verification for an existing ChatGPT account. The same account logs into ChatGPT normally without phone verification. I do not use API keys and am not trying to generate one. SMS verification code is never delivered. This blocks Codex CLI and IDE login completely. I would also like to report additional issues with the phone number input interface. The overall handling of phone numbers on this page feels very inconsistent and unintuitive.

For quick input, it should be possible to paste or type the full phone number including the country code. However, when doing so, the system duplicates the country code in the input field, which is confusing. The first instinct is to delete the extra code, but removing it unexpectedly changes the selected country code.

After that, trying to manually reselect the correct country from the dropdown leads to another issue: the phone number field gets cleared, and the selected region is not properly preserved.

These behaviors make it very difficult to enter a correct phone number and complete verification. Please review and improve the input logic to make it more stable and user-friendly.

same issue here, i've moved into Kazakhstan and i still use +7 number... when trying to send code it shows me "An error occurred during authentication (invalid_phone_number)"... i dunno what to do cuz i've just recently paid for this shifty subscription! i hope they will fix this soon and let users with +7 to have codes:(

Verified number on my account yet it keeps asking and not allowing me to access my account because "max exceeded" yet when I first try to sign in via ChatGPT, it takes the auth code from SMS perfectly fine before asking me to verify my phone number which I just input an SMS code for.

They legit have no idea what they are doing because their "solutions" from support aren't even possible. "Use incognito mode" as if Codex and VS Code Codex extension don't open a browser window session for auth that makes it literally impossible to open in incognito mode due to session tokens for sign in. They don't even understand how their own product works.

Only other option is to "use a new phone number". Yeah ok sure bud let me buy and open a new line to bypass this so you don't have to fix it. Absolute trash

same issue here, i've moved into Kazakhstan and i still use +7 number... when trying to send code it shows me "An error occurred during authentication (invalid_phone_number)"... i dunno what to do cuz i've just recently paid for this shifty subscription! i hope they will fix this soon and let users with +7 to have codes:(

К слову другие sms сервисы нихуя тоже не получают, либо там умная система VoiP или хз, хотя симки не дешевые 50 рублей бля. Не могу теперь войти в родной кодекс акк, хотя в гпт сам могу войти. Ебанный бред, че ж делать то когда даже настоящие пользователи без санкций не могу войти..

I think this is one of the trends of capitalism. Look, they give you a free plan for a short time, while you can use multiple numbers and increase your free limit. Chắc đang block vùng VN thôi bác, OpenAI còn có đống bộ lọc để block. Em dùng sđt chính (không dại đem đi dùng mấy dịch vụ lạ) mà vẫn bị báo như bạn này. Giờ chả dám mua tài khoản, gặp lỗi codex thì chỉ có phí tiền.

I am absolutely exhausted with OpenAI's support team. They've been leading me in circles for days, only to come back and ask the exact same question from 3 days ago.
They demanded that I specify the EXACT time of the OTP requests. It's ridiculous to ask a user that, especially when I already provided them with the HAR file.

When I try to log into the phone number I get username not found. When I try to sign in with google I get redirected and it asks phone number If I put in the same phone number linked to my account it shows This phone number is already linked to the maximum number of accounts.

I am experiencing the same problem here in Indonesia, regarding the Codex login issue that never gets resolved. I have never experienced this before, and when I wanted to use it, it made things difficult for me. I also saw that this problem has been going on for almost a week with no clarity. I have tried many things, with various numbers that have never been registered, on various devices, but that didn't solve the problem. At one time I managed to get through and receive the code, but an error occurred. Im indonesian, and i just got the same problem. but earlier, i got my OTP code. what i did is simple, placing 62 before my real number. so it should look like 62+(my country code) 62 000 0000 0000(your number). im not sure if this gonna work for other countries. but with this, i can regain access to my codex account.

It's been exactly a month since this issue was opened and nobody from OpenAI did anything about this critical issue.

I know this issue is marked as closed, but I wanted to provide additional data because I appear to be experiencing a very similar problem.

My situation:

• Active ChatGPT Plus subscription
• Google SSO account
• Codex previously worked in VS Code
• After being logged out, re-login started requiring phone verification
• My valid Russian mobile number is rejected as "Invalid phone number"

What I verified:

ChatGPT works normally

OpenAI Platform works normally

API access works normally

https://chatgpt.com/codex works normally

Same account, same subscription

❌ VS Code Codex login does not work

I contacted OpenAI Support and my case was escalated to a support specialist.

Additional findings:

• VS Code logs show requests to:

https://chatgpt.com/ces/v1/rgstr

• The extension receives:

HTTP 403 Forbidden

• Direct browser access to:

https://chatgpt.com/ces/v1/rgstr

returns:

{"detail":"Method Not Allowed"}

which suggests the request reaches the OpenAI service.

• Support indicated that phone verification can still be triggered by risk signals (new session, VPN, unusual location, etc.).

I also tested from a different network (mobile hotspot) and the login flow still eventually requires phone verification and rejects my valid mobile number.

Because the issue is marked as closed, could someone clarify whether:

1. Issue #20161 was fully fixed?
2. It was superseded by another issue?
3. Phone-verification-related login failures are now being tracked elsewhere?

At least in my case, the underlying behavior still appears to exist.

I can't login to my account, which i paid subscription to use.
And there's no way to workaround this, using an Authenticator app or one-time-code to an Email doesn't fix it. Once you enter the code, it immediately shows that they can't send a message to your phone number (redirects https://auth.openai.com/phone-otp/select-channel). Why do we even have other auth options at this point?

I already activated advanced security, and always redirect into "https://auth.openai.com/phone-otp/select-channel"

I followed same steps now, I can see whatsapp option but i have tried too many time earlier. Looks like i have wait for 12 to 24 hours more.

I tried enroll Advanced Account Security, but Codex still asked me phone verification without WhatsApp option sadly.

What worked for me:

1. Install Codex CLI on macOS.
2. Sign in through the CLI first.
3. After that, open VS Code and sign in to the Codex extension.

The extension immediately recognized the existing authentication and did not ask for phone verification anymore.

My Russian (+7) number was never used.

For me, the regular codex login flow also led to phone verification.

What finally worked was using the device-code flow after updating the CLI and clearing the old revoked auth state.

Steps that worked for me on macOS:

brew upgrade --cask codex
codex --version
codex logout

Then I removed the old auth file if it still existed:

rm ~/.codex/auth.json

After that I used device auth:

codex login --device-auth

This gave me a device code and a link:

https://auth.openai.com/codex/device

I opened the link in the browser, entered the device code, and the login completed without asking me for phone verification.

After that, I tested the CLI:

codex

and sent a simple prompt like:

Say hello

Once the CLI worked, I opened VS Code again and the extension picked up the working Codex auth.

Important: this may not work for everyone. If codex login --device-auth itself redirects you to phone verification, then your account is probably still being forced through the phone verification gate. But in my case, the device-code flow was different from the regular VS Code / browser login flow and solved the issue.
