Voice transcription stays stuck after setup until toggled off and on again
What version of Codex are you using?
- Codex App: latest update as of 2026-05-01 (exact About dialog version not captured)
- Local
codex --version:codex-cli 0.46.0
Platform
- macOS 26.4.1 (Build 25E253)
- Darwin 25.4.0 arm64
Summary
After the latest update, voice transcription in the Codex desktop app can get stuck in an auth/setup state. It eventually works, but only after going back to Settings, turning voice transcription off, and then turning it back on. This makes the feature appear broken for new users during the first-run/setup path.
What happens
- Open Codex after the latest update.
- Voice transcription UI shows a persistent sign-in/setup prompt that does not disappear.
- Pressing it opens the login page.
- After logging in, the control changes to a loading/spinner state and appears to stay there.
- Complete setup.
- Voice transcription still does not work immediately.
- Go back to Settings.
- Toggle voice transcription off.
- Toggle voice transcription back on.
- Voice transcription starts working.
Expected behavior
After login/setup completes, voice transcription should become available immediately without requiring users to manually toggle the setting off and on again.
Actual behavior
The UI remains stuck in a sign-in or spinner/loading state until the user discovers the off/on toggle workaround in Settings.
Why this matters
This is likely to frustrate new users because the setup flow makes the feature look broken even though the feature itself works after the manual reset. Voice transcription is a very useful Codex feature, especially because it can turn rough spoken wording into clearer, more accurate text for the prompt. It is worth making the first-run flow reliable.
Workaround
Go to Settings, turn voice transcription off, then turn it back on.
