What issue are you seeing?

Here’s a clean, ready-to-paste GitHub issue you can open on openai codex github repository.

Just copy this and post it:

Title

Phone verification OTP not received (Pakistan) – unable to log in

---

Description

I am unable to complete login to Codex because phone verification is not working.

During login, I am prompted with the “Phone number required” screen. After entering my phone number, no OTP code is ever delivered.

---

Details

  • Country: Pakistan
  • Phone format used: +92XXXXXXXXXX (correct international format, without leading zero)
  • Phone type: Real mobile SIM (not VoIP / not landline)
  • Tried multiple times: Yes
  • Different networks/SIMs tested: Yes
  • VPN: Not used (also tested without VPN)
  • WhatsApp verification option: Not available in UI

What steps can reproduce the bug?

I enter my phone number
Click “Continue”
No OTP is received (SMS never arrives)
No fallback option (e.g., WhatsApp) is shown
I am completely blocked from logging in

What is the expected behavior?

OTP should be delivered via SMS or alternative method (e.g., WhatsApp)
Or a fallback verification option should be available

Additional information

This issue seems to affect multiple users recently
Others are reporting similar problems where OTP is not delivered at all
This suggests a possible backend or regional delivery issue rather than user error

I finally solved the OTP issue and wanted to share a workaround in case it helps others.

What worked for me:

  • I went to my Google Account settings.
  • I updated/changed the phone number linked to my Google account (you can also add a new number).
  • After that, I tried signing into Codex again using the updated number.

This time, the OTP was delivered successfully and I was able to log in.

Not sure if this is specifically related to regional carrier issues or account verification sync, but updating the Google account phone number solved it for me.

Hopefully this helps someone else facing the same issue.

Thanks for sharing the workaround. I tried updating/changing the phone number linked to my Google account as well, but unfortunately it still did not solve the issue for me.

I’m still getting the “Unable to send a verification code to this phone number” error when trying to log in. It may be related to regional carrier restrictions or something account-specific.

Hopefully there’s another fix or an official response soon.
