Allow renaming Codex sessions in VSCode Extension
Open 💬 2 comments Opened May 5, 2026 by max-stoddard
What variant of Codex are you using?
VSCode IDE Extension
What feature would you like to see?
- Currently we can fork conversations in Codex
- This is a useful feature, but after we fork, it is hard to distinguish between the sessions
- It would be useful to rename these sessions for a variety of reasons, including this use case, similarly to how we do in ChatGPT

Not a final solution, but for your local conversations you can go the codex folder (~/.codex in macOS), and you can change the name in the session_index.jsonl file. You identify the conversation and you change the assigned name. If you don't see a line created for your conversation, you can just create one with a past date. In your conversation just go for /Status and it will give you the ID.

You save it and then Cmd+Shift+P and execute: Developer: Restart Extension Host.
That will restart the extensions and you'll see the new name.
Hope it helps.
