Computer Use Chrome extension is unavailable in Chrome Web Store; is there an offline installer?

What happened

The Chrome extension used by Codex Desktop's Computer Use / Google Chrome integration cannot currently be downloaded from the Chrome Web Store.

The Chrome Web Store page opens at:

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmjag/error

but it shows an error page saying the item cannot be purchased or downloaded. In my localized Chrome UI, the message is:

此商品无法购买或下载

<img width="1396" height="754" alt="Image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/207b062e-6509-4068-9fca-b42a3cc5cd8b" />

In Codex Desktop settings, the Computer Use > Google Chrome page still shows Chrome as not connected and offers "Reinstall extension", but following the store link leads back to the unavailable item page.

Environment

  • OS: Windows
  • Codex desktop app package: Microsoft Store / WindowsApps
  • Appx package observed locally: OpenAI.Codex_26.506.2212.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Area: Settings > Computer Use > Google Chrome
  • Chrome Web Store extension ID from the failing URL: hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmjag

Expected behavior

The Chrome extension needed for Computer Use should be installable from the Chrome Web Store, or Codex should provide a documented fallback installation path.

Actual behavior

The Chrome Web Store reports that the item cannot be purchased or downloaded, so the Computer Use Google Chrome integration cannot be connected through the in-app install/reinstall flow.

Question / request

Is there an official offline installer, CRX package, unpacked extension bundle, or another documented fallback that users can download and install manually when the Chrome Web Store page is unavailable in their region/account/browser?

If an offline package is not currently available, could one be provided or documented for cases where Chrome Web Store distribution is blocked or unavailable?

I know the problem, if you are in hong kong, this extension is not available
Try switching your VPN to the US

Mine is the same. Even when the VPN is switched to the US, it still doesn't work.

@hu1990a It appears to be tied to the region associated with your Google account, rather than the region of your network connection.

Adding another reproduction that matches this issue.

User-visible state:

  • Codex Settings -> Computer Use shows Google Chrome disabled with the German message: Von deiner Organisation deaktiviert oder in deiner Region nicht verfügbar (Disabled by your organization or unavailable in your region).
  • The Codex Chrome extension had previously been installed and showed connected, but after uninstalling it cannot be reinstalled through the documented Chrome Web Store URL.
  • Opening https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/codex/hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg redirects to /detail/hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg/error and the Chrome Web Store page shows: Dieser Artikel ist nicht verfügbar (This item is not available).
  • Searching the web/store UI does not surface the extension either, so from the user's point of view there is no supported way to reinstall it.

This looks like availability/rollout gating of the Web Store listing and/or Codex Chrome backend, not a local Chrome profile issue. Please keep this open until there is either a supported install path or clear official documentation explaining which regions/accounts can use the Chrome extension.

Same issue here from Switzerland on a Mac. The extension is not available. I could work around it by opening a VPN connection to the US and then installing the extension.

Same here on macOS.

I’m trying to connect the Codex Chrome Extension from the Codex desktop app. The app shows the browser integration flow as connected/available, but when I click “Open” for the Codex Chrome Extension it redirects to the Chrome Web Store URL:

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmjag/error

Chrome Web Store then shows “This product is unavailable”.

Codex version: 26.602.40724, released Jun 5, 2026.

So the in-app setup flow currently points to an extension that cannot be installed from the store. It would be helpful to have either:

  • the Chrome Web Store listing made available again;
  • an official CRX / unpacked extension fallback;
  • or a documented manual installation path.

Current result: Codex desktop asks me to install the Chrome extension, but the only provided installation path is unavailable.

You can ask codex to install the extension.
Ask it to download and package the .crx then install it in your browser via registry.

"I did verify on June 9, 2026 that Google’s extension update service exposes a direct .crx for the official extension ID hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg"
"
What I did:

  • Registered the extension at HKCU\Software\Google\Chrome\Extensions\hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg
  • Set update_url to https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx
  • Brave picked it up live and downloaded 1.1.5_0 into:
  • xxxx\User Data\Default\Extensions\hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg\1.1.5_0
  • Brave’s Secure Preferences now contains an active settings entry for that extension ID

"

hope this is helpfull

Offline installation from crx

codex-openai-1.1.5.crx
SHA-256: 54e8d5c26f0e47ee9e33b56276b7e1305991dd5de7b046a4c74e57e076f0545f

  1. Download the extension package to a normal folder
  2. Rename .crx to .zip
  3. unzip the extension so you have any directory
  4. Open Chrome and go to chrome://extensions/
  5. Enable Developer mode using the toggle in the top-right corner
  6. Click Load unpacked
  7. Select the extracted extension folder, not the .crx file itself
  8. Chrome will load the extension and it should appear in the extensions list

It works, but it needs a few extra steps. Fortunately, those steps can be handled by Codex as well.

Quick update: the Codex Chrome extension appears to be available again for my Chrome profile/account.

I can now see the extension installed and enabled on chrome://extensions:

  • Extension: Codex
  • Version: 1.1.5
  • ID: hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg
  • Description: Control Chrome with Codex.

So at least for my account/region, the Chrome extension is back and no offline CRX workaround seems necessary anymore.

Same issue here on macOS + Chrome.

The official Codex extension URL redirects to /detail/hehggadaopoacecdllhhajmbjkdcmajg/error, and the extension is unavailable in both the store page and search.

I tested VPN off, different VPN regions, and a clean Chrome profile, with the same result every time.

This looks like Web Store/account-region gating rather than a local Chrome issue. Please confirm whether the extension is currently region/account restricted or provide an official reinstall path.
