A concrete placement proposal for this enhancement:

  • Move the image-preview close button out of the native Windows title-bar control area and place it inside the previewed image/content bounds, inset about 16–24 px from the image’s top-right corner.
  • Keep the download control in the viewer toolbar, but reserve a title-bar safe area so no preview action competes with the native app close button.
  • Keep Esc as a secondary keyboard dismissal path.

This makes the ownership of the close action visually unambiguous: the X inside the image closes the image, while the X in the native title bar closes Codex.

Suggested acceptance criteria:

  1. The preview close target never overlaps the native minimize/maximize/close region on Windows.
  2. The two close targets remain clearly separated at 100%, 125%, and 150% display scaling, both maximized and windowed.
  3. The preview close button remains anchored to the visible image bounds as the image is zoomed or resized.

I have prepared a privacy-redacted annotated mockup showing the proposed position and will attach it in a follow-up comment.
