Allow Parent Agents to Set Goals for Subagents

What variant of Codex are you using?

App

What feature would you like to see?

Codex goals are currently scoped to the current thread. It would be useful if a parent/orchestrator agent could assign persisted goals to its spawned subagents.

This would help subagents keep working until their assigned task is actually complete, blocked, usage-limited, or budget-limited, instead of returning early with a partial free-form summary.

Desired behavior:

  • spawn_agent can optionally create the subagent with an initial goal.
  • Parent agents can query a child subagent’s goal status.
  • Parent agents can assign a new goal to an existing child after the previous goal is done or stopped.
  • list_agents / wait_agent can show or wait on child goal status.

This would make multi-agent workflows more reliable and reduce the burden on the parent agent to manually verify whether each subagent fully completed its assigned task.
