Codex ChatGPT login flow

What issue are you seeing?
I am paying for ChatGPT Plus and cannot access Codex through the advertised ChatGPT login flow.
This is not an API key issue. Codex CLI is installed correctly. Both codex login and codex login --device-auth redirect me to auth.openai.com/add-phone.
This appears to be a known/auth-related Codex issue:
- https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/20320
- https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/20813
- https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/20884
Please either:
- remove the phone verification gate from my account for Codex ChatGPT-login;
!!! confirm in writing that Codex ChatGPT-login now requires phone verification for paid Plus users !!!!
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- I have an active ChatGPT Plus subscription.
- I installed the official Codex CLI on Windows.
- I checked that Codex CLI is installed correctly by running:
Get-Command codex
PowerShell detects codex.exe, so the CLI is installed and available in PATH.
- I am not trying to use an API key. I am trying to sign in through the official ChatGPT login flow.
- I run:
codex login
- Codex starts a local login server on localhost and opens the official OpenAI authentication page in the browser.
- Instead of completing the ChatGPT/Codex login, the OpenAI authentication flow redirects me to:
auth.openai.com/add-phone
- The page says that a phone number is required to continue.
- I also tried the official device authorization method:
codex login --device-auth
- Codex gives me a device code and asks me to open:
https://auth.openai.com/codex/device
- After entering the device code and signing in to my ChatGPT Plus account, the same problem happens again: OpenAI redirects me to the phone verification page.
- This confirms that the problem is not with my Windows installation, not with PowerShell, and not with the Codex CLI itself.
- The issue happens inside OpenAI’s own authentication system, during the official ChatGPT/Codex login flow.
- This is not an API key flow, so the API key phone verification requirement should not apply here.
- As a paying ChatGPT Plus user, I expected to access Codex through the advertised ChatGPT subscription login path.
- However, I am blocked from using Codex unless I provide a phone number.
What is the expected behavior?

I come from Vietnam and no phone number from my country work, they keep show error when I click send otp
Idk wth is openai doing I'm also completely stressed by this
me too
me too
I encountered a completely opposite problem. My account was initially registered with a phone number. After logging in with the phone number, OpenAI asks me to bind/verify an email address. I can receive and enter the verification code, but then the page shows an error. If I click the retry button, it appears to succeed, but no actual authentication is generated, it does not redirect back to Codex, and when I try to log in to Codex again, I get stuck in the same loop.
Errors I observed include:
I have an active ChatGPT Pro subscription, and ChatGPT web works normally with the same account, but Codex CLI / Platform authentication cannot complete.
Environment:
codex loginandcodex login --device-authI also tried reinstalling Codex CLI, clearing local auth data, using different browsers / incognito mode, but the authentication loop still happens.
Yeah, this issue also I've heard from some of my friends, but the issue is they cannot stop the people who are abusing the accounts, and they are troubling the entire world with these nonsense things.
The problem is with Codex only. I don't know what they are doing. What is the reason for them to do it?
The people who are able to bypass Codex and use it are able to use it. Genuine customers are having issues.
Once, the issue I am getting is that whenever I try to log in, I use multiple accounts. For some accounts, I have no issues, but for some accounts it is repeatedly asking me to verify with the OTP.
I have a phone number that can be verified by SMS.
It can help you activate your account.

This is really stupid. I followed OpenAI's official path completely. I didn’t use any tools from GitHub that are reverse proxies for the official website, and still, I can’t use it. Those who use abuse tools can enjoy it, while those who use the official tools can’t access it at all.
I don't know why they do this. When I replied to inquiries about this issue in the group and on social media, I was even ridiculed by those who used special means to verify their identity.
ChatGPT just pulled out my "primary phone number" out of its butt (maybe old phone number that used to be listed on my Google acc - I login via Google). Codex stopped working today unless I verify that phone number it pulled out of its butt. No visible way to change.
+1 I have no idea how they got my old phone number, even though I have been using my new phone number. They still send messages and ask me to reply by sending a code from that phone number, but, unfortunately, this is not available.

Maybe this is the way to inform your rate limit with the phone number that has expired. BTW, I am using a UK phone number. 🤣
I am a ChatGPT Plus subscriber.
My ChatGPT account works normally.
I previously used Codex successfully.
After signing in on another device, my Codex authentication was invalidated and I was forced to re-authenticate.
Now every Codex login redirects to the phone verification page.
The phone number previously associated with my account is no longer accessible because it has been retired by the carrier.
I cannot complete the verification process and therefore cannot access Codex.
Could you please help recover access to my Codex account or update the verification method?
Thank you.
I`m having the same issue, I´ve never used my phone number in ChatGPT before, I do have multiple accounts that I´ve used in my company, but none used my phone number, and Now I´m locked out from codex.
The worst part is that you can actually use your phone number for security verifications in chatgpt.com but not in the openAI auth system.
Same issue here. macOS (Darwin 25.5.0, arm64), ChatGPT Plus subscriber.
Symptoms:
codex loginandcodex login --device-authboth redirect to phone verificationWhat I've tried (all failed):
~/.codex/auth.json, retriedcodex login --device-auth— same phone verification wallConclusion: Codex auth is requiring verification of a legacy phone number that I no longer control. There is no user-facing way to update or remove this number. ChatGPT login works normally; only Codex is broken.
Please provide a recovery path for users who have already proven account ownership through other authentication methods (Google OAuth, email, etc.) to update an obsolete phone number — or remove the phone verification gate for Codex entirely for authenticated paid users.

same here, it required me to add phone but showing phone number invalid ( the account i am using is a business team account )
Even my Google-billed ChatGPT subscription—which I pay for at full price—now requires SMS verification. Since my account was registered many years ago, I am unable to complete the two-factor SMS verification. How can I resolve this? Should I request a refund?
same here, can't login because the codex auth is requiring old phone OTP. GPT login uses my passkey normally
Big if true
same, I was just using Codex fine in Free Tier but after I bought the Plus subscription and tried to log out and login again, I am stuck at the https://auth.openai.com/phone-otp/select-channel since I don't have access to my old phone number. THIS IS ANNOYING AS HELL. I bought the subscription to use Codex but now I feel like this is a SCAM.
My account got fixed after I contacted support, but the message implied the issue (from early June 2026) should have been fixed for everyone.
@lostmsu It still showing up for me even now. I can't login to Codex Desktop + CLI. I've contacted support and they said to create a new account BRUH. Like, I'm trying to tell him that I am stuck in that login flow because I don't have access to my old phone number and OpenAI support tellling me about the new sign-up process BS. I sent a reply, restating the MAIN ISSUE and they haven't replied yet.
Frustration levels getting high ngl. Should I just switch to Claude at this point?
I'm running into the same problem.
烦人的手机号码验证,根本就用不了,所以还是用回Claude Code省事
