Unable to send message

were you able to get the app working? facing same issue for my employee

Hey I think I figured out that my files were on iCloud and not locally
downloaded. On top of minimal available storage on my computer meant I
couldn’t redownload the chats and its content therefore it wouldn’t load.

What’s the setup on your end?

Huh, in our case it got working after reinstall and we never knew the true cause. They def didnt have any elaborate setup in terms of their files. We didnt check the disk space but i assume if it had installed later without issue, it wasnt it. Win 10, most probably x86, some of the older thinkpads, but i didnt intrude much on their specks.

Gotcha. Glad it started working after the reinstall then.

@andrii-bolshakov-dataforest same issue here, but i found out it is related to Codex app upgrades and ongoing chats. Usually we can fix this by upgrading Codex (it has MANY updates, like daily), and then starting a NEW chat. Seems like they update their APIs (?) daily, and making even one day old versions not compatible, which is crazy.
You will lose context, but at least you can work.

2 weeks later, this killer bug still exists in latest Codex, in EVERY instance of codex i have tested! It's crazy that nobody at openai doesnt think this is an urgent issue.

Suggestions:

• give user the possibility to stop / delay auto-updates! auto-updates of Codex arrives DAILY, sometimes multiple times per day. Every update resets every conversation, making the app unusable.
• or create "new" conversations by snappshotting current ones, so that at least some context can be retrieved

Quick fix that worked for me:

• Rightclick conversation in the left menu
• Click "Fork into new worktree" and let it start
• Cancel the forking to new worktree after 2 - 3 seconds
• Retry sending message in the stale conversation

Conversation may work again (it did for me, hope for your too).

UPDATE: Codex has shipped the possibility to avoid forced auto-installations of new (minor) Codex versions, BUT it's a bit hidden

• there is now a checkbox to activate / deactivate auto-installations
• BUT it shows only WHEN there is a new update, which is weird UX
• macOS Codex menu bar, click "Codex", select "Check for updates", IF there is an update, the checkbox will be visible
• do not click the blue update button in the lower left corner, as it will override the checkbox setting

I ran into this issue trying to add permissions configuration after removing sandbox configuration. Switching back to sandbox config fixed it for me.

FIXED! The issue seems to be fixed in latest Codex Version 26.707.51957, released 12th of July 2026.
Also the Codex app has been rebranded into the "ChatGPT app", so it's now not a standalone app anymore.
I recommend @benbirkhahn to retest and potentially close the github issue as fixed!
