Windows: Codex App UI renders as transparent/blank white content area

What issue are you seeing?

The Codex desktop app UI is rendering incorrectly on Windows.

Actual behavior:

  • The left/sidebar area appears transparent and shows the Windows desktop wallpaper/icons behind the app.
  • The main content area renders as a large blank white panel.
  • The app menu/sidebar labels are visible, but the conversation/content area does not render correctly.
  • No visible error message is shown in the UI.

Expected behavior:

  • The Codex app window should render with an opaque background.
  • The sidebar and main conversation/content area should display normally.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open the Codex desktop app on Windows.
  2. The app window loads.
  3. Observe that the sidebar/background is transparent and the main content area is blank white.

Environment:

  • Codex App version: 26.527.31326
  • OS: Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.19045.0 x64

What happened?

After updating Codex, clicking the Windows Maximise button causes the left navigation/sidebar area to render transparent. Windows/File Explorer behind Codex becomes visible through the left panel.

The top/menu bar also loses visible drop-down/menu text. The main chat area continues rendering normally.

This appears tied to the maximized window state.

Environment

Codex package: OpenAI.Codex_26.527.3686.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0

Codex.exe version: 148.0.7778.179

Windows:

  • Windows 10
  • Version: 21H2
  • Build: 19044.3086
  • Architecture: x64

GPU:

  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
  • Driver version: 32.0.15.9649
  • Driver date: 2026-05-05

Display:

  • Single monitor
  • Resolution: 2560x1440
  • Primary display: Yes
  • Working area: 2560x1400

Reproduction steps

  1. Open Codex Desktop on Windows.
  2. Click the Windows Maximise button.
  3. Observe that the left sidebar becomes transparent and the top/menu bar text disappears.

Expected behavior

The sidebar and top/menu bar should render normally when the Codex window is maximized.

Can confirm this issue as well. It started happening after the latest update.

For me, this issue only occurs when Codex is in fullscreen mode and focused. As soon as I switch focus away from the Codex application, the transparency issue disappears.

Reinstalling helped for a little while, but after a few fullscreen/window resize operations, the problem returned.

Resolution: 2560x1440

Appearance > Translucent sidebar to turn it off, but I agree it is a very ugly feature.

I can reproduce this on Windows 11.
The issue appears when the Codex window is maximized. The sidebar and top menu bar become transparent and parts of the desktop show through. Restoring the window to a smaller size makes the issue disappear.

There's two toggles, one for light theme and another for dark theme. Toggling the first one did nothing for me too until I seen then tried the second toggle.

The workaround is to disable the "semi-transparent sidebar" setting. That said, the default enabled state may be worth reconsidering, since several users (including myself) interpreted the effect as a UI bug rather than a feature. On my system it also reduced sidebar readability.
