What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.527.3686.0

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

On Windows Codex desktop, when I toggle the integrated terminal / bottom panel, the bottom panel appears momentarily but immediately disappears again. The toggle action seems to run, but the bottom panel cannot stay open, making the integrated terminal unusable.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Open the Codex desktop app on Windows.
  2. Open any thread/workspace.
  3. Toggle the integrated terminal / bottom panel.
  4. Observe that the bottom panel appears briefly, then immediately disappears.
  5. Try toggling it again.

The issue is reproducible across workspaces and appears to affect the bottom panel specifically.

What is the expected behavior?

The integrated terminal / bottom panel should remain open after toggling it, and should only close when I toggle it again or explicitly close it.

Additional information

Environment details:

  • Platform: Windows
  • Codex package: OpenAI.Codex_26.527.3686.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Codex app version: 26.527.3686.0
  • Executable version from Windows Event Log: 148.0.7778.179
  • Install location:

C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\OpenAI.Codex_26.527.3686.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0

After repeated attempts and troubleshooting, Windows Event Viewer recorded:

  • Application Hang, Event ID 1002
  • Windows Error Reporting, Event ID 1001
  • Event name: MoAppHang
  • Package: OpenAI.Codex_26.527.3686.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0

Troubleshooting already tried:

  • Restarted Codex
  • Restarted Windows
  • Repaired/reset app
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Codex
  • Checked Windows Defender Protection History: no quarantined or blocked Codex files
  • Terminated all Codex, codex, and node_repl processes
  • Renamed/reset:
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\OpenAI\Codex
  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\OpenAI.Codex_2p2nqsd0c76g0\LocalCache\Roaming\Codex\web\Codex
  • Relaunched with:
  • --disable-gpu --disable-gpu-compositing

The issue persisted after all of the above.

One additional note: the day before this started, I began setting up a Codex connection/link with my phone, but I did not complete that setup. I am not sure whether it is related.

I reviewed #25225. This is related because both involve the integrated terminal on Windows, but I do not think it is the same behavior.

In my case, the bottom panel / integrated terminal does appear, but only momentarily. It immediately disappears again without me closing it, so the panel cannot stay open at all. I am not specifically reporting a Windows-native terminal that never opens, nor a WSL terminal that opens but errors when closed.

This looks like a bottom-panel visibility/lifecycle issue rather than a terminal backend startup/cleanup error.

Obsevered idential behavior. ctrl `, menu View>>Open Terminal, CTRL J each open the bottom panel, but it immediately closes.

Restarted Codex
Restarted Windows
Repaired/reset app

do not correct the issue

Yes, in latest update in general settings you need to enable or re-enable 'show bottom panel icon' (or smth like this, and it will start to work again

I’m seeing the same behavior on a newer version.

Environment:

  • Codex displayed version: 26.602.40724
  • Windows package version: OpenAI.Codex_26.602.4764.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Windows 11 Pro 25H2, OS Build 26200.8457
  • Device: Dell G15 5511

In my case, both the Bottom Panel and the Integrated Terminal are affected.

The Bottom Panel briefly appears and then immediately disappears. The Integrated Terminal behaves the same way: it briefly opens, then closes or returns to the default side panel view. So neither the Bottom Panel nor the Integrated Terminal is usable.

I tried switching the terminal location between Bottom and Right Side, and also tried both PowerShell and Command Prompt. I also restarted the Codex app and restarted the computer, but the issue still reproduces consistently.

I checked for related system issues as well:

  • No Codex/OpenAI application crash or hang events were found.
  • No matching Windows Error Reporting .wer files were found.
  • No Microsoft Defender threat or quarantine records were found for Codex/OpenAI/node.
  • Codex.exe, codex.exe, and node_repl.exe were still running.

From the user-facing behavior, this looks like the same issue described here. The main difference is that on my system Windows does not record it as MoAppHang or an application hang.
