Codex Desktop: generated suggested prompts are cached but not shown for ChatGPT Pro account

Environment

  • Codex Desktop: 26.527.31326
  • Codex CLI: 0.134.0
  • Platform: macOS, Apple Silicon
  • Auth: ChatGPT
  • Subscription: ChatGPT Pro 5x

Issue

The “Suggested prompts” area no longer shows project suggestions.

This happens across multiple local projects, not just one workspace. The suggestions appear to be generated successfully and cached under ~/.codex/ambient-suggestions/, but they are not rendered in the Desktop UI.

Expected behavior

If pending generated suggestions exist for a project, Codex Desktop should show them in the Suggested prompts area for an eligible ChatGPT Pro account.

Actual behavior

No project suggestions are shown.

I previously saw connected-app onboarding cards such as Teams / Outlook. After dismissing those cards, generated project suggestions still did not appear.

Diagnostics

Confirmed locally:

ambient-suggestions-enabled = true
auth mode = ChatGPT
OPENAI_API_KEY is not set
local ambient suggestion cache contains pending suggestions for multiple projects

After logging out/in and clearing Codex Desktop Local Storage, the issue still reproduces.

Recent Desktop Sentry breadcrumbs include Statsig warnings:

[Statsig] The user does not have the required id_type "userID" for Gate "2425897452"
[Statsig] SDK initialization has not completed. Reason: Loading:Unrecognized

Since this is a ChatGPT Pro account, the account should be eligible.

Possibly related

Notes

This Codex install previously used API key auth and later switched to ChatGPT auth. Current auth appears to be ChatGPT-only.

No tokens, account IDs, full email addresses, or raw auth files are included.

I am seeing a related, but slightly earlier, failure mode: the entire Suggested prompts setting is absent rather than suggestions being generated but not rendered.

Environment

  • ChatGPT Desktop: 26.707.31123 (build 5042)
  • Bundled Codex CLI: 0.144.0-alpha.4
  • Platform: macOS 26.5.2, Apple Silicon
  • Auth: ChatGPT
  • Feedback ID: 019f48c0-0575-7cb0-8b29-ba70c36be074

Observed behavior

  • Suggested prompts are available in ChatGPT web for the same account.
  • Desktop Settings contains no Suggested prompts row or Enable ambient suggestions toggle.
  • No ~/.codex/ambient-suggestions/ cache has been created.
  • No ambient-suggestions preference exists in the persisted desktop state.

Diagnostics

  • The desktop bundle contains the Suggested prompts UI and references desktop gate 2425897452.
  • The application signature is valid.
  • Codex diagnostics report the installation, ChatGPT authentication, configuration, provider connectivity, WebSocket connection, and state databases as healthy.
  • Desktop Statsig initializes as Ready and successfully refreshes values.
  • I do not see the missing-userID or Loading:Unrecognized Statsig warnings reported in this issue.

This appears to fail before the cached-but-not-rendered case described here: the desktop entitlement or feature gate never activates, even though the corresponding web experience is available.

Additional confirmed root-cause evidence from Codex Desktop 26.721.81911 on macOS:

  • Current authenticated plan metadata is prolite.
  • The installed app's Suggested Prompts eligibility predicate allows API-key auth, OpenAI employee email, or ChatGPT plans plus, pro, business, team, and self_serve_business_usage_based.
  • prolite is omitted from that predicate, even though current Codex auth code recognizes Pro Lite as a first-class plan.
  • Settings search indexes the Suggested Prompts label independently, so affected users see a dead search result that cannot be opened.

This reproduces with generated suggestions present. The likely fix is to include the ProLite plan in the desktop eligibility predicate and add a regression test covering plan-to-settings visibility.
