What issue are you seeing?

I moved to the other country and right now I have different number then before. As there is no option to change phone number and codex is not able to work without sms stating today - it is basically unusable on payed account.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

try to change phone number on codex/chatgpt account

What is the expected behavior?

I am able to change phone number, or at least login to codex using other 2fa I have(otp/passkey)

I can't even find where to change the number. It keeps trying to use an old number and I literally cannot find where it even knows this number exists. It's not tied to Google Sign-in. It's not in the ChatGPT account settings. I'm bricked from authenticating, everything else uses passkey. I never had to do this before so confused how I even upgraded this account last week to begin with if it suddenly needs SMS to reauthenticate on a number I haven't had in over a year.

I can't even find where to change the number.

As you can see on screenshot above - they saying that is impossible

It should be possible. Probably an oversight.

My issue was more inline with:
https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/25670

In it support also mentions its not possible. They recommend making a new account and requesting a refund.

It should and it is a security loophole that it is not. Right now some other person has second factor for my account.

I’m running into the same issue, and the response I received from OpenAI Support was very similar.
What I still don’t understand is why Codex insists on phone number verification even after iCloud Keychain / Face ID verification has already passed. ChatGPT also supports authenticator apps as a security option, so it’s confusing why Codex still requires a mobile phone number specifically.

Update: I can log in to Codex successfully now.

After getting help from OpenAI Support, the phone verification step no longer appears in my Codex login flow. I tried logging in again through the browser with my Google account, and it redirected me back to Codex successfully.

Thanks to OpenAI Support for helping resolve this issue.

Device authentication sometimes worked instead as well

How did OpenAI Support assist you? I contacted them but they tell me to wait for further update.

OpenAI Support followed up later and told me to go back to the phone verification screen and click “Unable to send verification code to this phone number.” But when I tried the official Codex desktop app again, that second verification screen didn’t show up anymore. I just logged in with my Google account and got redirected back to Codex successfully.

I also tried the OAuth login for OpenClaw today. That one still showed a verification step, but it gave me several options, so I could choose one that worked for me. So maybe they’re still adjusting the login flow. You might want to wait for their follow-up and try again later.

They know and have ignored people about this for months now. My account is just bricked. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to contact my bank because their support is literally bots, there's no other way.
