Codex desktop app shows “Computer Use plugins unavailable” on Windows

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

Version 26.601.20914

What subscription do you have?

$20 pro

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

The Codex desktop app shows:

Computer Use plugins unavailable

Under:

Codex desktop app → Settings / Computer use

The same page also shows:

Always-allowed apps: None yet

This appears to block Computer Use plugin functionality in the desktop app.

I can access Codex Cloud in the browser at:

https://chatgpt.com/codex/cloud

So the issue appears to be specific to the Codex desktop app / Computer Use plugin availability rather than general Codex account access.

I have already contacted OpenAI Support under case number 09416325. I provided:

  • Screenshot
  • Screen recording reproducing the issue
  • Latest Codex desktop log file
  • DNS flush troubleshooting was also completed

Support also asked for a HAR file, but because the issue is in the desktop app, I am not sure a browser HAR from Codex Cloud captures the actual desktop-app failure.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Feedback ID: no-active-thread-019e8a98-cd99-7803-963e-81fedfb1c6fc 1. Open the Codex desktop app on Windows.

  1. Sign in to the affected OpenAI account.
  2. Open the Codex app settings.
  3. Go to the "Computer use" section.
  4. Observe the Control section.

Actual result:

The page shows:

Computer Use plugins unavailable

The "Always-allowed apps" section shows:

None yet

There does not appear to be any local control, toggle, or repair option to enable Computer Use plugins from this screen.

I also reproduced access to Codex Cloud in the browser at:

https://chatgpt.com/codex/cloud

That browser page loads, but the desktop app still shows Computer Use plugins unavailable.

What is the expected behavior?

The Codex desktop app should either:

  1. Show available Computer Use plugins and allow me to manage/allow apps, or
  2. Display a clear reason why Computer Use plugins are unavailable.

For example, the app should say whether this is due to:

  • Account eligibility
  • Subscription plan
  • Workspace/admin settings
  • Region
  • Operating system support
  • Feature rollout status
  • Missing local dependency
  • App/plugin cache issue
  • Disabled entitlement / feature flag

The current message, "Computer Use plugins unavailable", does not explain whether this is a local app issue or an account/workspace availability issue.

Additional information

OpenAI Support case number: 09416325

The issue has been ongoing for about five days. The support process has been slow because each day I receive one additional diagnostic request, then I respond, then wait again.

Troubleshooting already completed:

  • DNS flush
  • Screenshot provided
  • Screen recording provided
  • Latest Codex desktop log file provided
  • Confirmed Codex Cloud is accessible in browser at https://chatgpt.com/codex/cloud

The affected UI is specifically in the Codex desktop app:

Computer use → Control → "Computer Use plugins unavailable"

Screenshot/recording available if needed.

I would like to know whether this is:

  • A known Codex desktop app bug
  • A Windows-specific issue
  • A broken local plugin/cache state
  • An account/workspace entitlement issue
  • A rollout or feature-flag issue

A faster workaround or reset procedure would be helpful, especially if there is a safe way to reset the Codex desktop app plugin state without breaking the rest of the installation.
