Codex Desktop: Allow choosing the default directory for new projects

Resolved 💬 2 comments Opened Jun 9, 2026 by mikefioshko Closed Jun 9, 2026

Description

Codex Desktop automatically creates every new project inside ~/Documents.

There is no option to choose the project location during creation, and I could not find a setting for changing the default projects directory.

Expected behavior

Users should be able to:

  • Choose the folder when creating a new project.
  • Configure a default directory for new projects, for example ~/Documents/My Files/Codex.

Actual behavior

New projects are always created directly inside ~/Documents, which clutters the Documents folder.

Moving projects afterward also causes existing chats to display the warning:

Current working directory is missing. The working directory for this chat no longer exists.

Environment

  • Codex Desktop for macOS
  • Projects are local

Sincerely,
Mike Fio
