What issue are you seeing?

Hello,

I recently upgraded to the Plus plan (Kč 499/month, including Kč 86.60 VAT), but when I open Codex, I still see the message:

"You're out of Codex messages – Upgrade"
"You've hit your usage limit. Upgrade to Plus to continue using Codex (https://chatgpt.com/explore/plus), or try again at Jul 1st, 2026 12:51 PM."

Since I already have an active Plus subscription, could you please investigate why my account has not been updated accordingly?

If this issue cannot be resolved promptly, I would like to request a refund.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Ruhi

What steps can reproduce the bug?

NA

What is the expected behavior?

It should have worked when I took new package.

I hit a very similar case in the desktop UI: an active Plus account still gets usage-limit copy that says to upgrade to Plus.

From the OSS side, there appears to be a likely copy-selection issue in codex-rs/protocol/src/error.rs:

  • UsageLimitReachedError::fmt currently prefers the backend promo_message whenever it is present.
  • If the backend sends generic promo copy such as “upgrade to Plus” while plan_type is already Plus, the client can surface a contradictory upsell instead of the plan-aware fallback.
  • The plan-aware fallback already knows how to avoid this for paid plans (Plus -> Pro / purchase credits; Pro -> purchase credits; workspace plans -> ask admin), but it is bypassed by the generic promo message.

A small patch that fixed this locally was:

  • Only honor promo_message for Free, Go, Unknown, or missing plan_type.
  • For known paid/workspace plans, ignore the generic promo message and fall through to the existing plan-aware copy.
  • Add regression coverage that:
  • a Plus user receiving generic “upgrade to Plus” promo copy does not see that copy, and
  • a Free user still sees the promo copy.

Local validation on openai/codex main:

just test -p codex-protocol
# Summary: 230 tests run: 230 passed, 0 skipped

just fix -p codex-protocol
# exit 0

just fmt
# exit 0

git diff --check HEAD
# exit 0

I did not open a PR because docs/contributing.md says unsolicited external PRs are closed without review, but I can share the patch details if useful.
