Symptoms:
- iPhone ChatGPT shows “Waiting for desktop...”
- Codex desktop has a mobile icon and Connections > Add device
- clicking the mobile icon opens a black/empty page
- Add device shows a QR code, but scanning it only reopens ChatGPT on iPhone to the same “Waiting for desktop...” page
- logging out/in changed the UI behavior but did not fix pairing

- Codex desktop repeatedly enables remote control but finds zero clients/connections
- feature bootstrap cache stays empty
- desktop log shows a post-login bootstrap error for
user.custom.workspace_type

Summary
Codex desktop on macOS cannot complete mobile pairing with ChatGPT on iPhone.
Repro steps
- Open Codex desktop on Mac.
- Click the mobile icon near Settings, or go to Settings -> Connections -> Add device.
- Scan the QR code with the ChatGPT iPhone app.
- ChatGPT opens, but stays on “Waiting for desktop...”.
- On Mac, the mobile-connect UI may open as a black/empty page.
Expected
The iPhone should pair with the running Codex desktop session.
Actual
The iPhone remains stuck on “Waiting for desktop...”, and the Mac never completes pairing.
Observed details
- Before logout/login, a “Mobile connect” option was visible.
- After re-login, the UI changed, but pairing still failed.
- Clicking the mobile icon opens a black/empty page.
- Settings -> Connections -> Add device shows a QR code, but scanning it just reopens ChatGPT to the same waiting screen.
