Codex CLI extremely slow today: simple turns take 9-10 minutes despite high-tier subscription

Summary

Codex CLI is extremely slow today. Simple assistant turns that should take seconds are sometimes taking 9-10 minutes before a usable answer comes back. This is happening despite using a high-tier Codex subscription / 20x plan.

Environment

  • Codex CLI: codex-cli 0.139.0
  • OS: Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS on WSL2
  • Kernel: 6.6.87.2-microsoft-standard-WSL2
  • Date observed: 2026-06-11

Observed behavior

  • Very simple chat responses can take 9-10 minutes.
  • The slowdown is severe enough that I had to abandon a previous session and start a fresh one.
  • Local shell commands themselves appear to return normally; the painful delay is in Codex CLI assistant responsiveness / turn completion.

Expected behavior

Simple assistant turns should complete in seconds or at least within a predictable short latency window, especially on a higher-tier subscription.

Impact

The CLI becomes difficult to use for normal coding and planning work when each small response can take close to ten minutes.

Related context

I found several related open performance issues, but they do not exactly match this report:

  • #26766: Codex Desktop in WSL mode takes 1-2 minutes per response when plugins are enabled
  • #25715: Codex App is unusably slow with WSL as agent environment
  • #23807: codex-cli stalls for exactly 300s between tool result and next model request

This report is specifically about extreme latency today, with some simple turns taking 9-10 minutes.

Request

Could the team please check whether there is a current service-side, routing, subscription-tier, or CLI regression causing this? If there are diagnostics I should collect from the CLI, please let me know which command/logs are most useful.
