Codex app version

Desktop Codex: 26.609.30741 — released Jun 11, 2026

Platform / plan

  • macOS Tahoe 26.5.1
  • Apple Silicon MacBook Pro
  • Pro plan

Summary

After updating to the latest Codex Desktop version, most of the previously missing unclassified/general Chats appear to have been restored. However, project-scoped conversation history is still not properly recovered.

Several long-inactive projects still show No chats in the sidebar, even though those projects definitely had many previous Codex conversations. It is not possible that they truly have zero chats.

For privacy, I am intentionally not including specific project names or conversation titles here. The key issue is that the latest recovery appears to have improved general Chats, but project-level history is still missing.

Observed behavior

  • The latest update restored many conversations under the general/unclassified Chats section.
  • However, multiple project sections still show No chats.
  • These affected projects have existed for a long time and had many previous conversations.
  • The missing conversations are not visible or resumable from the project sidebar.
  • This makes the project look empty even though it should have historical chat records.

Expected behavior

If Codex restores missing conversation history, it should restore both:

  • general/unclassified Chats,
  • and project-scoped conversation histories.

Projects with older valid conversations should not display No chats unless they truly have no history.

Actual behavior

The latest version seems to restore many general Chats, but older project-scoped chats are still missing. Long-inactive projects still appear empty, even though they previously had many conversations.

Why this matters

This is a serious recoverability and workflow issue. Codex project conversations contain important development history, debugging context, implementation decisions, and task continuity.

If a project has not been used for a while and its history still shows No chats, the user cannot resume previous work from the correct context. This blocks long-term project workflows and makes the sidebar unreliable.

Request

Please continue fixing the conversation history recovery and re-indexing logic. The recovery should not only restore general Chats; it also needs to restore project-scoped conversations.

At minimum, Codex should:

  • fully re-index project-scoped conversation history,
  • recover older chats inside each project,
  • distinguish between truly empty projects and projects whose older chats failed to load,
  • provide a fallback way to list older project conversations,
  • and offer a user-facing recovery/reindex option for missing project history.

The latest update is an improvement, but the recovery is still incomplete because project histories are still missing.
