Feature request: add optional timestamps for user messages in Codex Desktop conversations
Resolved 💬 1 comment Opened Jun 13, 2026 by Hughzang Closed Jun 14, 2026
What variant of Codex are you using?
All
What feature would you like to see?
Codex Desktop currently allows an assistant to include timestamps in its own replies via instructions, but user messages do not appear to have a native visible timestamp in the conversation UI.
This makes long-running troubleshooting sessions harder to audit, especially when:
- a thread spans multiple hours or days
- the user needs to reconstruct when a local action happened
- context is compacted or resumed later
- the assistant is already asked to include timestamps in replies, but the user side remains untimestamped
Requested behavior:
Please add a Codex Desktop setting to show message timestamps for both user and assistant messages.
Possible options:
- Show timestamps for all messages
- Show timestamps on hover
- Use local timezone
- Support a clear format such as
YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss - Include timestamps in exported or archived conversation logs if export is supported
Environment:
- Product: Codex Desktop
- OS: Windows 11
Why this matters:
This would improve traceability for debugging, local system maintenance, long-running agent work, and timeline-sensitive conversations.
