What issue are you seeing?

Lost all chat history. Projects are there, but have empty chats. I can't change any settings. When I open settings up and attempt to set them back to WSL2, the Codex says I need to restart, and when I do, all the settings have reset back to factory. This happened when updating to Version 26.609.41114 and persists when upgrading to Version 26.609.71450, Version 26.611.61049 and Version 26.611.62324

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, running with admin rights, nothing works.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Install latest version. Attempt to change a setting.

What is the expected behavior?

Codex should actually work

Give us a way to set our version. Release the binaries on github so we can install them ourselves, as mentioned in: https://github.com/openai/codex/issues/26914

What fixed it for me:

This was on the Windows Store Codex app.

Two things mattered:

  1. The Store app was launching an old cached app-server/runtime:
  • active %LOCALAPPDATA%\OpenAI\Codex\bin\codex.exe was 0.130.0-alpha.5
  • packaged resources contained 0.140.0-alpha.19
  • after killing all Codex.exe / codex.exe processes and refreshing the active cached runtime, codex.exe --version reported codex-cli 0.140.0-alpha.19
  1. The Windows history DB had stale WSL/Linux path metadata:
  • %USERPROFILE%\.codex\state_5.sqlite
  • many threads.cwd rows were /home/... or /mnt/...
  • the Windows app-server rejects those in plugin/list with:

Invalid request: AbsolutePathBuf deserialized without a base path

  • converting those paths to Windows-readable paths fixed the conversation list:
  • /home/user/... -> \\wsl.localhost\Ubuntu\home\user\...
  • /mnt/c/... -> C:\...

There were also a couple non archived thread rows with preview = '', which made them invisible because the visible-thread indexes/filter require preview <> ''. Setting preview = title for those rows restored them.

After backing up the DB, normalising threads.cwd, filling empty previews, and relaunching the app, thread/list succeeded and the old conversations appeared again.

So the core issue seems to be: Windows Store Codex can get into a bad migrated state where history exists, but stale Linux-style cwd metadata and/or empty previews make the app fail or hide conversations. The bad migration was also causing the settings to reset for some reason.
