Bug description

Since approximately 2 days ago (around June 16, 2026), the image generation feature (gpt-image-2 / built-in Imagen-style generator) stopped automatically saving generated images to the folder:

~/.codex/generated_images/<session-id>/

The generation itself still works — the model returns the image and it appears in the chat. However, no file is written to disk. Users now have to download the image from the chat interface, where it comes in heavily compressed/low-resolution quality.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Use any image generation command/prompt in Codex.
  2. Check the folder ~/.codex/generated_images/.
  3. Expected: full-quality PNG is saved.
  4. Actual: no file is created.

Environment

  • Codex version: [укажи свою версию, например 0.140.x]
  • OS: [Linux / macOS / Windows]
  • Installation method: [CLI via pip / App / etc.]

Additional information

This worked correctly in previous versions (e.g. 0.139.x). The regression forces users to use lower-quality images from the chat. It significantly breaks the workflow for people who rely on local full-resolution files.

Would be great to have this fixed soon. Happy to provide any additional logs if needed.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Codex App.
  2. Start a new chat or use any existing chat.
  3. Use any image generation prompt, for example:
  • "Generate a photo of a mountain landscape at sunset"
  • or "a futuristic cyberpunk city, highly detailed"
  1. Wait for the image to be generated and appear in the chat.
  2. Check the folder ~/.codex/generated_images/ (or the equivalent path on your OS).
  3. Observe that no full-quality image file is saved in any subfolder.
  4. The only way to get the image is to download it directly from the chat, where it appears heavily compressed and in lower resolution.

Expected behavior:

A full-resolution PNG file should be automatically saved to ~/.codex/generated_images/<session-id>/ (as it worked in previous versions).

Actual behavior:

No file is written to disk.

What is the expected behavior?
