Codex for Windows 26.611.8604.0 forces the spellchecker to use en-US, so normal Vietnamese text is underlined as misspelled. Disabling “Highlight misspelled words” in Windows has no effect. Please add an in-app option to disable spellcheck or select Vietnamese.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

You just need to type Vietnamese into the chat.

What is the expected behavior?

I’m really bothered by the red underlines in the text, and I hope the developers will fix this issue soon.

Additional information

Once the issue has been fixed, I would appreciate receiving an email notification from the publisher to confirm that it has been resolved.

Update: this is still reproducible on a newer Windows build, and on this machine it first appeared immediately after the Codex app update.

Environment

  • Codex Windows package: OpenAI.Codex_26.721.3404.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0
  • Codex CLI bundled with the app: 0.146.0-alpha.3
  • Previous package observed on the same machine: 26.715.10079.0
  • OS: Windows Home Single Language, version 25H2, build 26200.8894, x64
  • Windows culture/UI culture: en-US
  • Windows user language list: only en-US, spellchecking enabled

Reproduction

  1. Open the Codex Windows app.
  2. Type a normal Vietnamese sentence in the prompt composer, for example:

  1. Every Vietnamese word is shown with a red spellcheck underline, although the Vietnamese text and diacritics are entered correctly.

Local diagnostic evidence

The active Chromium/Electron profile persists only the English dictionary:

The nested Codex web profile also reports:

  • intl.selected_languages = "en-US,en"
  • spellcheck.dictionaries = ["en-US"]

Read-only inspection of the packaged app.asar found:

  • primary windows created with webPreferences.spellcheck: true
  • the prompt editor rendered with spellcheck="true"
  • no visible in-app setting to disable spellcheck or select a spellcheck language

No installed files were modified during this inspection.

Expected behavior

Please provide an in-app spellcheck setting that allows users to:

  • disable spellcheck, or
  • select multiple dictionaries such as vi-VN and en-US

At minimum, Vietnamese text should not be checked exclusively against en-US with no supported way to change it.
