Computer Use missing from macOS Intel Codex app 26.616.71553

Summary

Computer Use / Record & Replay is unavailable after a clean reinstall of the Codex macOS Intel build. The app logs show that the managed Computer Use service fails to spawn, and the expected Computer Use helper bundle appears to be absent from the installed app bundle.

Environment

  • Codex app version: 26.616.71553
  • Codex bundle version: 4265
  • macOS: 14.7.7
  • Architecture: Intel x86_64
  • Region: Australia
  • Install path: /Applications/Codex.app

What I expected

Computer Use should be available in Codex settings, and Record & Replay should be available as described in the docs once Computer Use is enabled.

What happened

Computer Use does not appear in the app UI / plugins, even after a clean reinstall.

Today’s logs include:

Failed to reconcile managed Computer Use service appshotsEnabled=true errorMessage="Failed to spawn managed Computer Use service" nodeReplEnabled=false

The installed app bundle does not appear to contain the expected helper bundle:

/Applications/Codex.app/Contents/Resources/Codex Computer Use.app

The bundled plugin marketplace written by the app contains only:

browser
chrome
latex

Steps already tried

  1. Quit Codex completely.
  2. Removed the old Codex app from /Applications.
  3. Deleted old Codex installer downloads.
  4. Downloaded and installed the latest macOS Intel/x64 Codex build.
  5. Opened Codex from /Applications/Codex.app.
  6. Checked again for Computer Use / Record & Replay.

The issue persists after reinstall.

Additional note

This looks like a packaging, rollout, or feature-gating issue for the Intel/x64 macOS build rather than a macOS permissions problem, because the Computer Use service payload appears to be missing from the app bundle.

I can reproduce this on the same current Intel macOS/Codex Desktop build. This also prevents Record & Replay / \"Record a skill\" from appearing in the Plugins UI, because Record & Replay depends on Computer Use being available.

Environment:

Hardware/arch: Intel Mac, x86_64
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz
macOS: 15.7.7 (Build 24G720)
Codex Desktop: 26.616.71553
CFBundleVersion: 4265
Installed app: /Applications/Codex.app

What I tried:

[plugins.\"computer-use@openai-bundled\"]
enabled = true

After restarting/checking the Plugins page, Computer Use is still not usable and searching for record only shows the Transcribe skill; Record & Replay / Record a skill does not appear.

Local diagnostics:

$ uname -m
x86_64

The local Computer Use helper payload I found is arm64-only:

~/.codex/plugins/cache/openai-bundled/computer-use/1.0.750/Codex Computer Use.app/Contents/MacOS/SkyComputerUseService: Mach-O 64-bit executable arm64

Expected behavior:

  • Ship an x86_64 or universal Computer Use helper for Intel Macs, or
  • Make it explicit in the UI/docs that Computer Use and Record & Replay are unavailable on Intel macOS.

Actual behavior:

  • The app/settings/plugin configuration can expose Computer Use paths, but the helper cannot run on x86_64.
  • Record & Replay / Record a skill is not visible in the Plugins UI.
