Summary

Codex Desktop's in-app updater intermittently fails with a generic Update Error when updating from 26.616.71553 to 26.616.81150.

The update eventually succeeded after several retries, but the first several attempts failed with the same modal error.

Versions shown in the app

  • Current version before update: 26.616.71553
  • Current version release label: Released Jun 23, 2026
  • Offered update version: 26.616.81150
  • Platform: Codex Desktop on macOS

Reproduction steps

  1. Open Codex Desktop.
  2. Open the update prompt showing: Codex 26.616.81150 is now available—you have 26.616.71553.
  3. Click Install Update.
  4. Observe the updater failure modal.
  5. Retry several times.

Actual behavior

The updater sometimes shows this error:

Update Error! An error occurred while running the updater. Please try again later.

After multiple retries, the update eventually completed successfully.

Expected behavior

The update should either install successfully on the first attempt, or provide a more actionable error message / retry guidance / log location when the updater fails.

Impact

This makes the desktop update process unreliable. Because the error is generic and does not provide a reason, it is difficult to know whether the failure is caused by the updater, network/proxy/VPN conditions, permissions, or a transient download/install issue.

Notes

  • The About Codex window showing 26.616.71553
