Computer Use missing in Settings and Codex Computer Use helper is not installed

Codex app: 26.616.81150 x64 on macOS Intel
Settings > Computer use only shows Chrome and Locked use.
There is no “Any application” row and no Install button.

~/.codex/computer-use only contains config.json.
~/.codex/computer-use/Codex Computer Use.app is missing.
codex plugin list does not show computer-use.

Logs:
Failed to reconcile managed Computer Use service
errorMessage="Failed to spawn managed Computer Use service"

App was reinstalled from Codex-latest-x64.dmg and codesign verified OK in Terminal.
Resetting ~/.codex/computer-use did not restore the helper.

This is reproducible on Intel macOS.

Codex Desktop: 26.616.81150
Architecture: x86_64
Installer: Codex-latest-x64.dmg

Actual behavior:

  • Computer Use does not appear in Settings.
  • The “Any application” row and Install button are missing.
  • ~/.codex/computer-use only contains config.json.
  • ~/.codex/computer-use/Codex Computer Use.app is missing.
  • Codex Computer Use.app, SkyComputerUseClient, and SkyComputerUseService were not found under /Applications/Codex.app or ~/.codex.

Logs show:

Failed to reconcile managed Computer Use service
errorMessage="Failed to spawn managed Computer Use service"

Steps already tried:

  • Reinstalled Codex using Codex-latest-x64.dmg
  • Reset ~/.codex/computer-use
  • Restarted Codex
  • Checked whether the Computer Use helper app or service exists under /Applications/Codex.app and ~/.codex

None of the above fixed the issue.

This seems likely to be an Intel macOS / x64 packaging or helper installation issue, rather than a local macOS permissions issue, because the required Computer Use helper app does not appear to be installed at all.

Additional finding:

I also checked the plugin installation UI manually.

In the Plugins page, I clicked the “+” button to add a plugin and searched for computer use. No plugin or skill appears in the results. The UI shows that no plugin or skill was found.

So the issue is not only that Computer Use is missing from Settings. The Computer Use plugin also does not appear as an installable option from the plugin search UI on the Intel macOS x64 build.

I can confirm this is still reproducible on a newer Intel macOS x64 build.

Environment:

  • Codex Desktop: 26.623.61825, build 4548
  • macOS: 15.7.3 (24G419)
  • Architecture: x86_64
  • Installed app path: /Applications/Codex.app

Observed behavior:

  • Settings > Computer Use shows Chrome and Locked use.
  • Enabling Locked use fails with the toast: 无法更新“锁定操作”设置 / unable to update Locked operation setting.
  • Chrome control appears connected, but the Locked use toggle cannot be enabled.
  • This looks related to #28853 as well.

Local checks:

$ find ~/.codex/computer-use -maxdepth 3 -print
~/.codex/computer-use
~/.codex/computer-use/config.json

So ~/.codex/computer-use/Codex Computer Use.app is missing.

I also checked the installed app bundle for Computer Use related files:

I do not see Codex Computer Use.app, SkyComputerUseClient, or SkyComputerUseService under the installed app bundle or ~/.codex on this x64 install. This still looks like an Intel macOS x64 packaging/helper installation issue rather than a local permissions issue.

Intel compatibility evidence (official-only, observed 2026-08-16):

  • Host: MacBookPro16,1 / x86_64, macOS 15.7.9 (24G830).
  • Installed official /Applications/ChatGPT.app: bundle com.openai.codex, version 26.810.52044 (build 6662), x86_64. Deep signature validation succeeds (OpenAI Team ID 2DC432GLL2).
  • Official x64 DMG: <https://persistent.oaistatic.com/codex-app-prod/Codex-latest-x64.dmg>, SHA-256 94f9350d51741eda5d659fc53b18b2b8cc065e5306681d9bb38141120c6ea911. It contains the same x86_64 signed app, but only bundled plugins browser, chrome, deep-research, latex, reminders-macos, sites, and visualize; there is no computer-use, Codex Computer Use.app, SkyComputerUseService/SkyComputerUseClient, and @oai/sky/bin has no files.
  • The local Computer Use data has only config.json, with no helper, process, or socket.
  • By contrast, the default official Codex DMG (SHA-256 ecffb6fc0217a336fcceb8758f0a54cc3a0648115618a86bddccc1cb18fb48a4) includes the Computer Use/helper payload, but its main app, service, and client are arm64-only and cannot run on Intel.
  • Result: the Computer Use entry is missing, and Appshots fails through its shared service with Failed to spawn managed Computer Use service.

Could OpenAI provide an x86_64/universal payload or clarify Intel support status?
