What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

Version 26.623.42026

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

In Codex Windows app, Settings → Computer use shows:

“Computer Use plugins unavailable”

There is no Install button and no way to enable Computer Use.

I am signed into the correct ChatGPT Plus account, and I have already updated the Codex app. The “Always-allowed apps” section also shows “None yet”.

This looks different from the documented setup flow, where Computer Use settings should allow installing the Computer Use plugin before asking Codex to operate desktop apps.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Open Codex Windows app.
  2. Sign in with my ChatGPT Plus account.
  3. Confirm Codex app is updated to Version 26.623.42026.
  4. Open Settings.
  5. Go to Computer use.
  6. Observe that the Control section says:

“Computer Use plugins unavailable”

  1. No Install button is shown.
  2. “Always-allowed apps” shows “None yet”.

What is the expected behavior?

The Computer use page should either:

  1. Show an Install button for the Computer Use plugin, as described in the Codex Computer Use documentation, or
  2. Clearly explain why Computer Use is unavailable for my account, region, workspace, platform, or subscription.

Currently it only says “Computer Use plugins unavailable”, with no explanation or next step.

Additional information

I am trying to use Codex Computer Use on Windows so Codex can operate desktop apps/browser workflows. The issue happens before any Windows permission prompt or plugin installation step.

Please confirm whether this is:

  • an account eligibility / rollout issue,
  • a plugin availability issue,
  • a workspace/admin restriction,
  • or a Windows Codex app bug.

Thanks, the bot detected possible duplicates.

#30270 looks like the closest match to my case because it mentions Browser/Chrome/Computer Use plugins disappearing or becoming unavailable after Windows app updates due to stale bundled marketplace/cache state.

My current case:

  • Codex App version: 26.623.42026
  • Subscription: ChatGPT Plus
  • Platform: Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64
  • Settings → Computer use shows: “Computer Use plugins unavailable”
  • There is no Install button
  • Feedback ID: no-active-thread-019f0d31-8d84-7270-903d-aa3f5177999

I am not sure whether this is exactly the same root cause as #30270, but the visible symptom is the same. Please let me know if I should provide my redacted %USERPROFILE%\.codex\config.toml or bundled marketplace/cache directory listing for diagnosis.

Saieiei · 2 months ago

It is likely related to bundled marketplace cache is stale/incomplete.

Saieiei · 2 months ago

This is fixed on my machine.

Root cause:
The bundled marketplace cache was stale/incomplete.

Before repair, this folder only contained chrome:

C:\Users\Admin\.codex\.tmp\bundled-marketplaces\openai-bundled\plugins

But the current Codex app package contained the full bundled marketplace with:

  • browser
  • chrome
  • computer-use
  • latex

Fix performed:

  1. Updated [marketplaces.openai-bundled].source in C:\Users\Admin\.codex\config.toml to point to the current Codex app bundled marketplace:

\\?\C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\OpenAI.Codex_26.623.5546.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0\app\resources\plugins\openai-bundled

  1. Killed the stale Codex plugin host process:

extension-host.exe

  1. Moved the stale cache folder:

C:\Users\Admin\.codex\.tmp\bundled-marketplaces\openai-bundled

  1. Restarted Codex.

After restart, the cache regenerated correctly and now contains:

  • browser
  • chrome
  • computer-use
  • latex

Settings → Computer use now shows:

  • Any App
  • Google Chrome

So this appears to be the same stale bundled marketplace/cache issue as #30270.
