Codex Desktop 26.623 on Windows: context-window usage indicator missing again from composer UI
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
Codex Desktop on Windows. Current local package path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\OpenAI.Codex_26.623.9142.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0\app\resources\codex.exe This was first observed after the late-June 2026 Windows Desktop updates around: OpenAI.Codex_26.623.4041.0_x64__2p2nqsd0c76g0

What issue are you seeing?
The context-window usage indicator is no longer visible in the Codex Desktop composer UI.
Previously, the composer/model-selector area showed a visible context-window usage indicator/donut near the model selector. In the current UI, the bottom composer shows the model selector, e.g. 5.5 Extra High, microphone, and send button, but no context-window usage indicator.
This is not just a stale 0% value. The indicator is absent from the composer UI entirely.
This makes long-running coding threads harder to manage, because there is no passive way to see context pressure before compaction, context loss, or quality degradation.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Open Codex Desktop on Windows.
- Open an existing local project/thread or start a new thread.
- Look at the bottom composer area near the model selector.
- Observe that no context-window usage indicator/donut is visible.
What is the expected behavior?
Codex Desktop should show a visible context-window usage indicator in the composer UI, or provide an obvious setting/location for restoring it.
If this has intentionally moved, the new location should be documented or discoverable in the UI.
Actual behavior
No visible context-window usage indicator is shown in the composer UI.
Additional information
There was already a large historical thread:
- #23794 — "Codex Desktop no longer shows visible context/token usage indicator"
That issue was closed as completed after a setting/toggle path appeared to restore the indicator for some users.
However, the issue appears to have resurfaced or mutated in the 26.623 Windows Desktop line.
Related current/late-June issues:
- #30326 — reports the token usage indicator in chat is "gone again" on
26.623.41415, but was closed as duplicate. - #30567 — open, but covers stale/
0%context usage after reopening historical threads, not the indicator being absent entirely. - #29437 — open Windows issue for context donut showing
0%after reopening. - #29098 — open issue for "Show context window usage" setting not persisting after logout/login.
- #27244 — older open desktop UI regression mentioning missing context usage indicator.
I am opening this because there does not appear to be a current active canonical issue for the specific symptom:
Codex Desktop 26.623 on Windows no longer shows the context-window usage indicator in the composer UI at all.
Additional information
The official Codex changelog does not appear to document an intentional removal of the context-window usage indicator.
Please restore the visible composer indicator, or provide a clearly documented replacement/toggle.
