Codex Desktop updater repeatedly fails on macOS with installer/updater error dialogs
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
Version 26.623.70822 • Released Jun 30, 2026
What subscription do you have?
Pro
What platform is your computer?
macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 on MacBook Pro 16-inch, Apple M5 Max, 128 GB memory
What issue are you seeing?
Codex Desktop is frequently failing during the built-in update flow. I am trying to update from my current installed Codex version to the latest version, but the update fails repeatedly even after retrying several times.
I have seen at least two error dialogs during the update process:
Update Error!
An error occurred while starting the installer. Please try again later.
and:
Update Error!
An error occurred while running the updater. Please try again later.
The dialog only offers Cancel Update, so there is no clear recovery path, diagnostic detail, retry action, or fallback link. This increases my workload because I cannot reliably keep Codex updated and have to spend extra time retrying/troubleshooting the updater instead of working.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Open Codex Desktop on macOS.
- Trigger the built-in update flow to update from the currently installed version to the latest version.
- Wait for the installer/updater to start.
- Observe that the update fails with one of the generic
Update Error!dialogs above. - Retry the update several times.
- The update still does not complete.
What is the expected behavior?
The built-in updater should reliably download and install the latest Codex Desktop version on macOS.
If the updater cannot start the installer or cannot run the updater, it should provide an actionable error message, a specific error code/log location, and a clear recovery path, such as retrying, downloading the installer manually, or opening the relevant logs.
