Feature request: Support multiple Codex pets at the same time
What variant of Codex are you using?
Codex App
What feature would you like to see?
I would like Codex App to support having more than one Codex Pet active on screen at the same time.
Today, the pet feature appears to work as a single selected pet overlay. There are already feature requests around switching pets more quickly, but this request is specifically about concurrent pets: being able to “keep” multiple built-in or custom pets visible at once.
Suggested design
One possible design:
- Add an Add Pet action in Settings → Appearance → Pets, or in the pet overlay context menu.
- Allow multiple built-in and custom pets to be active simultaneously.
- Give each active pet its own overlay position, persisted across app restarts.
- Keep a simple per-pet context menu:
- Tuck away this pet
- Remove this pet
- Change this pet
- Set as primary pet
- Keep
/petand the existing wake/tuck behavior working for the primary pet, or optionally add “wake/tuck all pets”. - Consider a small limit, such as 3–5 active pets, to avoid accidental clutter or performance issues.
Why this would be useful
Codex Pets already make the app feel more personal, especially with custom pets. Once users collect several pets, switching is useful, but simultaneous pets would make the feature feel more like a small companion roster rather than a single skin selector.
It could also become useful later if pets are associated with different threads, projects, or task states. For example, one pet could represent the active thread, while other pets remain idle or show lightweight status.
Acceptance criteria
- A user can display at least two Codex Pets at the same time.
- Built-in and custom pets both work in the multi-pet setup.
- Each pet has an independent screen position.
- Pet positions and selected pets persist across app restarts.
- Existing single-pet behavior remains unchanged for users who only enable one pet.
- The UI makes it clear which pet, if any, is the primary pet for commands such as
/pet.
Additional context
This is different from quick switching. Quick switching changes which single pet is active; this request is for multiple active pets at the same time.
