Codex VS Code extension stopped auto-including IDE context after update

Previously working: July 7, 2026

Behavior before: prompts automatically included open file and selected text
Behavior now: open file and highlighted selection are no longer referenced unless manually added

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Select text in an open file in the IDE and prompt agent "What text have I selected?"

What is the expected behavior?

Codex IDE extension should automatically include open files and selected text, per docs

Additional information

Explicit commands still exist: Add to Codex Thread / Add File to Codex Thread
No documented setting found to disable automatic IDE context
Shared config had model pinned to gpt-5.4

Just noticed this in VS Code extension. I hope this wasn't removed, useful for workflow.

yeah, currently /ide doesn't do anything. an update bugged the extension or something.

I just noticed there is a context menu option Add to Codex Thread that creates a reference to open tab content, so that might be helpful as an alternative.

I'm facing the same problem. So far I've tried:

Logging out and back in → the IDE context icon appears briefly, but when I ask a question, it fails to recognize the selected code, and the icon disappears right after
Using /ide → no response
Reinstalling the Codex extension → no improvement
Switching to the pre-release version → same behavior as logging out and back in
Restarting VS Code → no improvement
Moving the panel from secondary to primary and back → same behavior as logging out and back in

This seems to be a session or context initialization issue rather than a missing installation.

Environment:

VS Code: 1.129.1
Codex extension: 26.715.61943
OS: WSL2 Ubuntu 22.04 in Windows11 25H2 26200.8875

I have the same issue, my environment is Ubuntu 20.04 with 1.129.1 vs code and 26.715.61943 codex extension. Besides, do you misinput your extension version? With extra "5" for 26.715.

Guys, this seems to be a bug in the latest version of codex extension. I manually installed version 26.5707.91948, and that fixed the issue.

I'm on version 26.721.41059, which I'm guessing is greater than yours.

/ide makes the IDE context briefly appear, then disappear forever again.

Hi @gpeal — sorry to ping you directly about this. You’re one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to the Codex VS Code extension. Your video from October 2025 was actually what introduced me to Codex.

The /ide-context command has stopped working since the launch of GPT-5.6 Sol. I’d really appreciate it if you could take a look, as the issue has persisted for more than two weeks. Hi folks, thanks for the reports and your patience. Happy to report that this issue should be resolved in the Codex IDE extension as of:

Stable: 26.803.41515, released August 7, 2026.
Pre-release: 26.5727.51351, released August 2, 2026.

If the issue persists after updating to one of these versions or a newer version, please comment with your extension version, editor, and operating system and we can investigate further.
