Suggestion — Move the "thinking intensity" control next to the model selector in the chat input area
1. Use case & pain point
When using the GPT desktop app (formerly the Codex desktop app) for daily tasks, I frequently switch thinking intensity based on task difficulty: simple Q&A uses low intensity for faster responses, while complex reasoning or coding tasks use high intensity to ensure quality. However, the thinking-intensity setting is currently buried several layers deep in the menu, so every adjustment requires navigating through multiple menus — which is cumbersome and inefficient.
2. Specific suggestion
Place the quick-switch control for "thinking intensity" directly next to the model selector below the chat input box, alongside the model selector. This would allow quickly and dynamically adjusting thinking intensity without going into multi-level menus.
3. Expected benefits
- Lower interaction cost: fewer steps to switch thinking intensity, preserving conversation continuity.
- Better pacing control: match intensity to task difficulty in real time — faster for simple tasks, more accurate for hard ones.
- Improved discoverability: surfacing a high-frequency setting makes it intuitive even for new users.
- Remember the "last used intensity" to reduce repeated selection.
- If space is limited, it could first be shown as an icon that expands to reveal the levels on click.
