Issue

The Chat / Quick Chat entry that previously appeared in the Codex left sidebar is no longer visible.

The sidebar currently shows New task, Projects, Pull requests, Sites, Scheduled tasks, and Plugins, but no Chat / Quick Chat entry.

The top-left product switcher correctly contains both ChatGPT and Codex. The Quick Chat keyboard shortcut still works, confirming that the feature itself is available and only the convenient sidebar entry is missing.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch ChatGPT Desktop 26.715.12143 on Windows.
  2. Switch to the Codex view.
  3. Check the left navigation sidebar.
  4. Observe that Chat / Quick Chat is absent.
  5. Invoke Quick Chat using its keyboard shortcut.
  6. Observe that Quick Chat opens successfully.

Expected behavior

Quick Chat should remain directly accessible from the Codex sidebar, allowing a lightweight conversation without leaving the current Codex task.

Actual behavior

The sidebar entry is missing, although the keyboard shortcut still works.

Additional information

The July 16, 2026 release notes state that Quick Chats remain available. This may be a Windows navigation regression or an incomplete UI rollout.

Additional Windows readback suggests this is a navigation/discoverability regression rather than removal of Chat functionality.

Environment:

  • Codex Desktop/MSIX: OpenAI.Codex 26.715.4045.0
  • Windows 11 x64

Observed:

  • The current installed UI bundle no longer renders a separate Chat navigation item in the top sidebar list after Pull requests, Sites, Scheduled tasks, and Plugins.
  • The same build still contains the ChatGPT/Work and Codex product-mode selector in the upper-left corner.
  • The visible selector showed Codex; switching to ChatGPT/Work is the remaining route to the chat surface.
  • The current local global state contains no supported setting that restores the former standalone Chat sidebar item.
  • A recurring chat-process notification JSON warning predates this navigation change, so it is not evidence that the missing item is caused by local state corruption.

No package, configuration, or global state was changed during this check.

The capability is still present, but the previous direct entry point disappeared without an obvious migration cue. Restoring a direct Chat/Quick Chat shortcut, or adding a one-time in-product explanation that it moved under the product selector, would reduce confusion and avoid users treating the change as data loss or corruption.
