Allow Codex Micro Mic key to trigger global Hold-to-dictate
What variant of Codex are you using?
ChatGPT/Codex desktop app for macOS — Codex Micro integration
What feature would you like to see?
Problem
The Codex Micro’s physical Mic key currently starts push-to-talk only in the ChatGPT/Codex composer. The desktop app already provides a global Hold-to-dictate action that can dictate into other applications, but Settings → Codex Micro does not let users assign that global action to the Mic key.
Requested feature
Please add Hold-to-dictate (global) as an available Command Key action in Settings → Codex Micro, so the physical Mic key can be mapped to it.
Expected behavior:
- Hold the physical Mic key to start global dictation in the currently focused text field, regardless of which app is active.
- Release the key to stop dictation and insert the transcript at the cursor.
- If possible, preserve the existing double-press behavior for hands-free recording.
- Use the ChatGPT/Codex app’s existing global dictation action; users should not need Work Louder Input or an external shortcut-remapping workaround.
Why this matters
This would make the dedicated Mic key useful across email, documents, Slack, browsers, IDEs, and other apps while retaining the integrated Codex dictation experience.

Related: #27657 covers a global dictation shortcut that fails outside Codex. This request is different: expose the existing global Hold-to-dictate action as a mappable Codex Micro Command Key action in the ChatGPT/Codex desktop app.

The closest to this is “start dictation” action ↓ however it is broken: when triggered in ChatGPT app, prints “This action isn’t available here”, and doesn’t work at all in other apps.

I can reproduce this on macOS with ChatGPT/Codex desktop 26.730.61639 (build 6234) and a Codex Micro. My intended setup is to keep one Layer 1 microphone key assigned to Voice Chat while assigning the second key to global Toggle Dictation or Hold-to-dictate.
“Start dictation” is available in the Micro action picker, but it reports that the action is unavailable/unsupported. The existing
globalDictationToggleandglobalDictationHoldcommands appear in Keyboard Shortcuts but are not offered in the Codex Micro action picker. WritingglobalDictationToggledirectly into the Micro configuration also does not work; after restarting, the button reverts to Fast Mode.In-app feedback ID:
