Windows ARM64: Existing conversation repeatedly crashes Desktop app, while the same conversation works via Remote Control
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
ChatGPT Desktop (Powered by Codex & OWL) Version: 26.721.41059 Released: 2026-07-25
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Pro
What platform is your computer?
Windows 11 Home 25H2 OS Build 26200.8875 ARM64 CPU: Snapdragon X Plus X1P42100 GPU: Qualcomm Adreno GPU
What issue are you seeing?
The desktop app initially works normally.
While using Codex in an existing project conversation, the desktop application suddenly exits without any error dialog.
After that:
- I usually need to repair or update the Microsoft Store installation before the app can launch again.
- If I reopen the same conversation, the desktop app immediately crashes again.
- If I create a brand new conversation, the app usually works normally.
The most interesting observation is that the exact same conversation continues to work correctly when controlled from the ChatGPT mobile app using Remote Control.
This suggests the Codex agent itself is still running correctly, but the Windows desktop application crashes when restoring the existing conversation.
Steps to reproduce
- Open ChatGPT Desktop.
- Work in an existing Codex project conversation.
- After some time, the desktop application exits without any error dialog.
- Launch ChatGPT Desktop again.
- Open the same conversation.
- The desktop application crashes immediately.
- Launch the app again.
- Create a new conversation.
- The new conversation usually works.
- Open the original conversation from the ChatGPT mobile app using Remote Control.
- The same conversation works normally from mobile.
Expected behavior
Existing conversations should reopen normally without crashing.
Actual behavior
Only certain existing conversations repeatedly crash the Windows desktop application.
The same conversation remains usable through ChatGPT mobile Remote Control.
I can provide additional logs if needed.
I suspect this may be related to restoring an existing conversation/session in the Windows desktop application, because the same Codex session continues working correctly through the mobile Remote Control feature.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Open ChatGPT Desktop on Windows ARM64.
- Open an existing Codex project conversation.
- Use Codex normally for a while (editing code, running tasks, etc.).
- The desktop application suddenly exits without any error dialog.
- Reopen ChatGPT Desktop.
- Open the same conversation again.
- The desktop application crashes immediately.
- Reopen ChatGPT Desktop again.
- Create a brand new conversation.
- The new conversation usually works normally.
- Open the original conversation from the ChatGPT mobile app using Remote Control.
- The same conversation works correctly from mobile without crashing.
Sometimes I also need to repair or update the Microsoft Store installation before ChatGPT Desktop can launch again.
What is the expected behavior?

Also reproducible on Windows ARM64 with ChatGPT Desktop 26.818.2441.0 and Codex CLI 0.148.0.
New Codex threads work normally, but opening any existing thread redirects the desktop app to the sign-in screen. Before resetting the app, opening an existing thread caused the app to close. Archiving existing Codex threads also fails.
Repair, Reset, same-account sign-in, Tailscale disabled, GPU disabled, and Codex CLI logout/sign-in did not resolve it. Existing threads still work from mobile.
This started immediately after the recent Codex/ChatGPT Desktop update.

Behavior:
This looks like a regression in existing-thread migration/session restoration after the desktop update.
