Feature request

Codex should display an automatically updated percentage progress indicator for every running task, especially long-running multi-step tasks.

Problem

For tasks that run for hours or contain many subtasks, users currently cannot quickly tell how much verified work is complete, how much remains, or whether meaningful progress is still being made. Manually putting a percentage in the task title is only a workaround and can become stale.

Suggested behavior

  • Show a visible 0–100% progress value for every task while it runs.
  • Derive progress from the task plan and completed/verified work units where possible.
  • Update it automatically as subtasks complete.
  • Distinguish estimated progress from verified progress.
  • Keep the value visible in both the task view and task/sidebar list.
  • For work that cannot be measured precisely, show that the percentage is an estimate and allow the agent to revise the denominator without making progress appear to move backward unexpectedly.

Use case

A user runs a large game-localization project containing dialogue production, UI localization, audio integration, lip-sync validation, gameplay modifications, installation, and end-to-end testing. A live percentage per task would make long autonomous work understandable without repeatedly asking for status or renaming the task manually.
