What version of the app are you using?

ChatGPT Desktop 26.727.51351 (build 6119)

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Pro

What platform is your computer?

macOS 26.6 (build 25G72), Apple Silicon

What issue are you seeing?

The new ChatGPT desktop app does not provide a way to move an existing ChatGPT conversation into a Project.

Projects created using the previous ChatGPT app are visible in the new desktop app, but an existing conversation cannot be added to them. The new app provides neither the drag-and-drop behaviour nor the right-click "Move to project" action available in ChatGPT Classic.

The same account and conversations can still be organized correctly by opening ChatGPT Classic. This indicates that the conversations and Projects support the operation, but the corresponding controls are missing from the new desktop app.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open the new ChatGPT desktop app on macOS.
  2. Locate an existing ChatGPT conversation that is not currently inside a Project.
  3. Attempt to drag the conversation onto a Project in the sidebar.
  4. Observe that the conversation cannot be moved into the Project.
  5. Open the conversation's context menu or other available actions.
  6. Observe that there is no "Move to project" action.
  7. Open ChatGPT Classic using the same account.
  8. Move the same conversation into the Project using drag and drop or the right-click "Move to project" action.
  9. Observe that the operation succeeds in ChatGPT Classic.

Expected behavior

The new ChatGPT desktop app should allow an existing conversation to be moved into any accessible Project.

It should provide at least one discoverable method, such as:

  • Dragging the conversation onto a Project in the sidebar.
  • Selecting "Move to project" from the conversation's context menu.

Actual behavior

The new desktop app displays existing Projects but provides no way to move an existing conversation into one.

The user must return to ChatGPT Classic to perform the operation.

Frequency

Occurs with every existing conversation tested, including conversations intended for Projects created in the previous ChatGPT app.

Impact

  • Existing conversations cannot be organized from the new desktop app.
  • Users maintaining established Projects must keep ChatGPT Classic installed solely to move conversations.
  • The new app exposes Projects without supporting a basic Project-management operation available in the previous app.

Workaround

Open ChatGPT Classic and move the conversation into the Project using drag and drop or the right-click "Move to project" action.

Additional information

  • The conversations and Projects are not missing.
  • Starting a new conversation from within a Project is different from moving an existing conversation into that Project and does not solve this problem.
  • The operation remains available in ChatGPT Classic with the same account.
  • No screenshots are included because the affected sidebar contains private conversation and Project names.
