Summary

Archived Codex chats that were already deleted on the web remain visible in the Windows desktop app and cannot be removed.

Environment

  • OS: Windows
  • ChatGPT/Codex desktop app version: 26.727.6591.0
  • Project: MRJHP
  • Session ID: 019fc09c-c24d-7c51-8b18-bc595da7658b

Affected archived chats

  1. 계산기 구현
  2. Remove past tasks
  3. 벽돌깨기 게임 만들기
  4. 오탈자, 버그, 문서, 테스트 개선 제안
  5. 코드베이스 설명 준비하기
  6. 중요한 코드베이스 부분 살펴보고 버그 수정

All six rows show a cloud icon, not a Local label/icon.

Reproduction

  1. Move a task from Recent to Archived.
  2. Try deleting it from Archived.
  3. Alternatively, restore it to Recent, try deleting it, then archive it again and try deleting it in Settings > Archived chats.
  4. Open chatgpt.com and check both Chat and Work under Settings > Data Controls > Archived chats.
  5. The six tasks are absent on the web, but continue to appear in the desktop app.

Troubleshooting already attempted

  • Archive/unarchive/delete in multiple orders
  • App restart
  • Sign out and sign in
  • Reset local browser profile/cache
  • Confirmed the installed app is the latest available version

Additional diagnostic issue

OpenAI Support asked me to enter /debug-feedback/report issue in the Codex app chat composer. The command was sent as a normal chat message instead of opening the feedback reporter, so no separate feedback session ID was generated.

Expected behavior

Chats deleted on the server/web should disappear from the Windows app's archived list, and the feedback slash command should invoke the diagnostic workflow instead of being sent as ordinary text.

OpenAI Support requested the session transcript for diagnosis. Attaching a sanitized diagnostic copy for session 019fc09c-c24d-7c51-8b18-bc595da7658b. Message bodies, reasoning, tool arguments and outputs, filesystem paths, account data, and authentication data were removed. The original transcript remains local and was not uploaded.

Update after additional troubleshooting on Codex Windows app version 26.727.6591.0:

  • Signed out of all 17 active OpenAI sessions, then signed back in.
  • Fully exited and relaunched the Windows app.
  • Backed up and reset the app's local Chromium/web profile cache, then relaunched the app and allowed it to create a fresh profile.
  • Verified the regular app thread index only exposes the current active task.
  • Despite the fresh local profile, Settings > Archived chats immediately repopulates the same six cloud archived chats.
  • Each row still exposes only “Unarchive”; there is no delete action.
  • The chats remain absent from ChatGPT web archived chats.

This rules out a stale local cache or stale authentication token. The archived entries appear to be returned by the Codex cloud archived-chat index, while deletion is unavailable in the Windows app UI. Related issue: #36520.

No account identifiers, local paths, logs, or screenshots are included in this update.

Could you please provide an update on the current investigation status and, if available, an estimated timeline for a fix?

The issue remains reproducible after signing out of all sessions, resetting the local app profile/cache, and confirming that the affected chats are absent from the web but still reappear in the Windows app. Since there is currently no workaround to permanently delete these archived cloud chats from the app, any guidance on priority, planned release, or interim workaround would be appreciated.
