Windows Codex Desktop hangs when Computer Use plugin is enabled

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.727.6591.0

What subscription do you have?

GPT plus

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26220.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

On Windows, Codex Desktop intermittently becomes unresponsive after Computer Use is enabled. Clicking + in the chat box can cause a long white screen and Windows displays “Codex is not responding”.

This occurred in both a native Windows project and a WSL workspace, so it appears to be global rather than repository-specific.

Disabling Computer Use eliminates the issue after a restart; enabling it reproduces the same behavior.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. In Codex Desktop Settings, enable the bundled Computer Use plugin.
  2. Restart Codex.
  3. Open any project (observed in both a native Windows folder and a WSL workspace).
  4. Click + in the chat box.
  5. Wait: the app can white-screen/freeze and Windows shows “Codex is not responding”.

Control:

  1. Disable Computer Use.
  2. Restart Codex.
  3. Repeat the + action. The hang does not occur.
  4. Re-enable Computer Use and restart. The hang returns.

What is the expected behavior?

Clicking + should open the chat control promptly and reliably, without freezing or making the Codex desktop app unresponsive.

Additional information

Evidence:

  • Windows Error Reporting recorded AppHangTransient for ChatGPT.exe (version 150.0.7871.182), and RADAR_PRE_LEAK_64.
  • The Codex log recorded:

after_agent hook failed; continuing ... hook_name=legacy_notify error=The filename or extension is too long. (os error 206)

  • The configured notify hook invokes a codex-computer-use.exe runtime helper with turn-ended.

The hook error is a clue, not proof of root cause. The key evidence is the A/B result: enabling Computer Use makes the hang recur; disabling it stops the hang after restart.

I can provide redacted relevant event/log excerpts if helpful.

Same here. Computer Use is enabled in my Windows ChatGPT app and shows “Interactive, Read, Write.” However, it never becomes available inside any chat, even after I restart ChatGPT, restart Windows, open Photoshop, and explicitly select @Computer Use. The plugin remains visible and enabled, but the assistant cannot access the screen, mouse, keyboard, Desktop files, or Photoshop. This happens in multiple new chats. Computer Use version shown: 26.730.61639.
