During a long streamed assistant response in the Codex TUI, the already-committed transcript remains
visible, but the mutable portion that is currently streaming intermittently disappears.
When the assistant message finishes and the finalized response is rendered, the missing streaming text
abruptly reappears.
This appears to be a transient rendering/finalization gap rather than persisted data loss:
- Previously committed output remains stable.
- The active streaming tail disappears temporarily.
- The same content reappears when the finalized assistant response is rendered.
The problem is intermittent. I have observed it in Ghostty, but I have not yet confirmed whether it
reproduces in other terminal emulators.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Run Codex CLI 0.146.0 directly in Ghostty 1.3.1 on macOS arm64.
- Do not use tmux or Zellij.
- Ask the model to generate a long response containing multiple paragraphs and Markdown tables.
- Watch the active response while it streams.
- Near assistant-message completion, observe the area containing the currently streaming text.
- The active streaming tail may temporarily disappear while the previously committed transcript remains
visible.
- When final rendering completes, the missing content suddenly reappears as part of the finalized
response.
The issue is intermittent, so the reproduction may need to be repeated several times.
A prompt that may increase the reproduction probability is:
"Produce a long response with at least 150 numbered sentences, followed by a 30-row Markdown table. Do
not write anything after the table."
I have not yet established a fully deterministic reproduction.

The issue was observed with:
- Codex CLI: 0.146.0
- Model: gpt-5.6-sol
- Platform: Darwin 25.5.0 arm64
- Terminal: Ghostty 1.3.1
- Multiplexer: none
terminal_resize_reflow: enabled
Three screenshots taken several seconds apart are attached:
- 12:19:39 — the actively streaming content is visible.
- 12:19:47 — the active streaming portion has disappeared while previously committed content remains
fixed.
- 12:19:59 — the missing content has reappeared after final rendering.
This appears to be an active-stream-tail to finalized-history-cell handoff issue.
A possible race exists in the assistant stream-finalization path:
flush_answer_streamcallsclear_active_stream_tail().- The finalized cell may be deferred through
AppEvent::ConsolidateAgentMessage. finalize_completed_assistant_messagerequests a redraw.- If a frame is rendered after the active tail is cleared but before consolidation installs and reflows
the finalized history cell, neither representation is visible during that frame.
