Feature request: Add the compact conversation navigation rail to Chat and Work sessions

In Task sessions, there is a compact vertical navigation rail on the left side of the conversation. It provides a visual overview of the conversation structure, shows the current position, and makes it easier to jump between different parts of a long session.

Chat and Work sessions currently do not provide the same navigation experience. This becomes a usability problem in long coding or analysis sessions, especially when the conversation contains many tool calls, file edits, command executions, and verification results. Users must rely on the normal scrollbar and manually search through a large amount of content.

I suggest adding the same compact navigation rail to both Chat and Work sessions.

Expected behavior:

  • Display markers for major user messages, assistant responses, tool calls, file edits, and command results.
  • Highlight the section currently visible.
  • Allow users to click a marker to jump directly to that section.
  • Show a short preview or section label on hover.
  • Keep the rail compact and optionally collapsible.
  • Preserve the user’s current position when switching between Chat and Work modes.

This would make long-running Codex sessions significantly easier to review and navigate. It would also make the interface more consistent, since Task sessions already provide a similar navigation mechanism.

The attached screenshot shows the compact navigation rail being referenced.
