Codex Micro Reasoning-only dial changes effort but no longer opens the picker/slider

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.727.51351 (build 6119)

What subscription do you have?

Pro 5x

What platform is your computer?

Darwin 25.6.0 arm64 arm

What issue are you seeing?

When the Codex Micro dial is configured as Reasoning-only, rotating it still changes the selected reasoning effort, but the model picker / Simple effort slider no longer opens automatically.

There is no slider, selector highlight, or animation when the dial is rotated. If I manually open the picker afterward, it confirms that the effort changed correctly.

The slider itself still works when it is already open. The regression is specifically the missing automatic opening and visual feedback.

This reproduces with native subscription models and does not appear to depend on OpenCodex or custom model routing.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Connect Codex Micro.
  2. Configure the dial as Reasoning-only.
  3. Select a native model that supports multiple reasoning-effort levels.
  4. Set the model picker to the Simple slider view.
  5. Close the picker.
  6. Rotate the dial one or more detents.
  7. Observe that the effort changes, but the picker remains closed and no visual feedback appears.
  8. Manually open the picker and confirm that the selected effort changed.

What is the expected behavior?

Rotating the Reasoning-only dial should:

  • Change the reasoning effort.
  • Open the Simple effort slider or advanced options.
  • Visually highlight or animate the newly selected effort.

This was the behavior in build 5813 and earlier, and it matches the behavior described in the Codex Micro documentation.

Additional information

Regression range

  • Last known good: 26.721.30844 — build 5813
  • First known bad: 26.721.31836 — build 5828
  • Still present in: 26.727.51351 — build 6119

In build 5813, rotating the dial opened the model picker and adjusted the reasoning effort. Starting with build 5828, rotation adjusts the effort without opening the picker.

Documentation mismatch

The official Codex Micro documentation describes Reasoning-only mode as:

“Adjust reasoning effort and open its slider or advanced options.”

https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/features/codex-micro#use-the-analog-stick-and-dial

The current behavior therefore appears inconsistent with the documented behavior.

Workaround

Short-press and release the dial to open the picker, then rotate it. The slider updates correctly while it is already open.

This requires the picker to be in Simple view. Long-pressing the dial opens the Codex Micro settings instead.

Ruled out

This does not appear related to:

  • OpenCodex or custom model routing
  • Native versus routed models
  • The show-ultra-in-model-picker-slider configuration
  • Simple versus Advanced availability
  • Hardware input or dial mapping

The dial input is received correctly and the effort changes, so the failure is specifically that rotation no longer opens the picker/slider.

Could you confirm whether removing the automatic picker opening was intentional? If not, please restore the previous visual feedback for the Reasoning-only dial.
