Persistent incorrect “1” badge on ChatGPT/Codex macOS Dock icon
Title: Persistent incorrect “1” badge on ChatGPT/Codex macOS Dock icon
I am experiencing a persistent red badge displaying “1” on the ChatGPT/Codex application icon in the macOS Dock, even though the application shows no outstanding notifications, unread tasks, or items requiring attention.
This is operationally important to me because I rely on the Dock badge to indicate when ChatGPT/Codex has completed work or requires action. A badge that remains present without a corresponding alert makes that signal unreliable.
Observed behavior
The ChatGPT/Codex Dock icon continuously displays a red “1.” Inside the application:
- The notification panel says “Nothing needs attention.”
- I have opened and cleared every visible blue-dot indicator across my projects.
- I have reviewed the alerts panel.
- I cannot find an unread conversation, completed task, approval request, or other item corresponding to the badge.
- The application’s available task states do not show a hidden task requiring attention.
Troubleshooting completed
I have tried all of the following without resolving the badge:
- Reviewed every project for blue-dot or unread indicators.
- Opened and reviewed the application’s alerts panel.
- Fully quit ChatGPT/Codex using Command-Q and reopened it.
- Opened macOS System Settings → Notifications → ChatGPT.
- Turned “Badge application icon” off, waited, and turned it back on.
- Restarted the macOS Dock process.
- Removed ChatGPT from the Dock.
- Fully quit the application.
- Reopened ChatGPT directly from the Applications folder.
- Added the application back to the Dock.
- Shut down the computer completely and turned it back on.
The red “1” returned or remained after all of these steps.
Diagnostic findings
The installed application is:
- Application path:
/Applications/ChatGPT.app - Bundle identifier:
com.openai.codex
Only one main ChatGPT application instance and one Dock entry were identified, so this does not appear to be caused by duplicate installations or Dock shortcuts.
The available Codex task-state check found no task marked as needing attention. All inspected tasks were idle, completed, or not loaded, apart from the active troubleshooting conversation.
Recent macOS system logs for com.openai.codex reported zero delivered ChatGPT notifications. The logs showed the application adding and subsequently removing notification requests successfully. Nevertheless, the Dock badge remained present.
This suggests that the displayed “1” is not synchronized with:
- the application’s “Nothing needs attention” state;
- the visible project unread indicators;
- the list of active or completed tasks; or
- the notifications currently delivered through macOS Notification Center.
Expected behavior
The Dock badge should display the number of genuine unread or actionable ChatGPT/Codex items. When the application says “Nothing needs attention” and there are no delivered notifications, the Dock badge should clear automatically.
If the badge represents a different category of state, the application should identify the corresponding item and provide a way to open or clear it.
Actual behavior
The Dock continuously displays “1,” but neither ChatGPT/Codex nor macOS identifies any corresponding unread notification or actionable item. No available user-facing action clears the badge.
Impact
I use the Dock badge as an operational signal that something requires review or action. Because this false-positive badge cannot be cleared, I can no longer rely on it to distinguish new work from stale state. Ignoring the badge is not a workable solution because doing so could cause me to overlook a legitimate future notification.

The feedback upload should contain the associated task details and diagnostic context. I am providing the ID here so maintainers can correlate this report with the uploaded information.
Requested resolution
Please investigate why the ChatGPT/Codex macOS application is maintaining or restoring a Dock badge count of “1” when both the in-app attention list and macOS delivered-notification count are zero.
I would also appreciate confirmation of:
- What underlying state currently controls the Dock badge.
- Whether there is an undocumented way to identify and clear that state.
- Whether this is related to the ChatGPT application using the
com.openai.codexbundle identifier. - Whether a fix or reliable non-destructive workaround is available.
